Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain.

Сталося так, що в суботу Він ішов через засіяні лани, і Його учні зривали колосся та, розтираючи руками, їли.
But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
А деякі фарисеї запитали: Чому робите те, чого не годиться [робити] в суботу?
And Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
У відповідь Ісус сказав їм: Хіба ви не читали про те, що зробив Давид, коли зголоднів сам і ті, хто був з ним?
how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?”
Як увійшов він до Божого дому, то взяв хліби покладання, яких не годиться їсти, хіба тільки самим священикам; він сам їв і дав тим, котрі були з ним?
And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
І додав: Син Людський є Володарем [і] суботи!
On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
І сталося іншої суботи, коли ввійшов Він до синагоги й навчав, був там чоловік, який мав суху праву руку.
The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.
Книжники й фарисеї стежили, чи в суботу Він буде оздоровляти, аби знайти звинувачення проти Нього.
But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” And he got up and came forward.
А Він знав їхні думки й сказав чоловікові, який мав суху руку: Підведися і стань посередині. Той підвівся і став.
And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?”
Ісус же промовив до них: Запитаю вас: що годиться в суботу — добро робити чи зло робити, душу спасти чи погубити?
After looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored.
Поглянувши на них усіх, сказав йому: Простягни свою руку! Той зробив, і рука його стала [здоровою, як і друга].
But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.
А вони сповнилися люттю і змовлялися один з одним, що ж зробити з Ісусом.
Choosing the Twelve
It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
Сталося тими днями, що Він вийшов на гору помолитися і провів цілу ніч у молитві до Бога.
And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:
А коли настав день, Він покликав Своїх учнів, вибравши з них дванадцятьох, яких і назвав апостолами:
Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;
Симона, якого назвав Петром, і Андрія, брата його, Якова й Івана, Филипа й Вартоломія,
and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;
Матвія і Хому, Якова Алфеєвого й Симона, званого Зилотом [1] ,
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Юду Якового та Юду Іскаріотського, який став зрадником.
Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,
Зійшовши, Він став з ними на рівному місці; також була велика юрба Його учнів та безліч народу з усієї Юдеї і Єрусалима, і з приморського Тира й Сидона,
who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.
які посходилися послухати Його й зцілитися від своїх недуг, а також ті, хто страждав від нечистих духів, — і оздоровлялися.
And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.
І кожний з натовпу намагався доторкнутися до Нього, бо з Нього виходила сила й оздоровляла всіх.
The Beatitudes
And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
А Він, поглянувши на Своїх учнів, почав говорити: Блаженні вбогі, бо ваше є Царство Боже.
“Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Блаженні голодні тепер, тому що ви насититеся. Блаженні ви, котрі плачете тепер, бо ви втішитеся.
“Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
Блаженні ви, коли люди ненавидітимуть вас, коли відлучать вас і ганьбитимуть, коли знеславлять ваше ім’я через Сина Людського.
“Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.
Радійте того дня і веселіться, бо ось нагорода ваша велика на небі, адже так само чинили пророкам їхні батьки.
“But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.
Та горе вам, багатії, бо ви вже маєте вашу втіху.
“Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
Горе вам, ситим тепер, тому що будете голодні. Горе вам, котрі смієтеся тепер, бо ви будете ридати і плакати.
“Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.
Горе, коли будуть хвалити вас усі люди, адже так само робили з лжепророками їхні батьки.
“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
Але вам, хто слухає, кажу: Любіть ворогів ваших; добро робіть тим, які ненавидять вас;
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
благословляйте тих, які проклинають вас; моліться за тих, які кривдять вас.
“Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.
Тому, хто б’є тебе по щоці, підстав і другу, а від того, хто забирає в тебе одяг, не борони й сорочки.
“Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.
Кожному, хто просить у тебе, — дай, а від того, хто забирає твоє, — не домагайся.
“Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.
Як хочете, щоби чинили вам люди, — чиніть [і ви] їм так само.
“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
А коли любите тих, хто любить вас, то яка вам благодать? Адже й грішники люблять тих, які їх люблять.
“If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
І коли добро чините тим, хто вам робить добро, яка вам благодать? Адже й грішники те саме чинять.
“If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.
Коли позичаєте тим, від яких сподіваєтесь одержати, яка вам благодать? Грішники також позичають грішникам, щоб одержати стільки ж.
“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
Тож любіть ворогів своїх, робіть добро, позичайте, нічого не очікуючи, — і буде вам велика нагорода: ви будете синами Всевишнього, тому що Він є добрий і до невдячних, і до злих.
“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Будьте милосердними, як і ваш Отець милосердний.
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.
Також не судіть — і не будете суджені; не осуджуйте, щоб не бути осудженими. Прощайте — і проститься вам;
“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure — pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
давайте — і дасться вам; міру добру, натоптану, струснуту й переповнену дадуть вам у поділ. Бо якою мірою ви міряєте, такою ж відміряється вам.
And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?
І Він розповів їм притчу: Чи може сліпий сліпого водити? Чи не впадуть обидва в яму?
“A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.
Учень не вищий за вчителя, але, вдосконалившись, кожний стане, як його вчитель.
“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
Чому бачиш скалку, яка в оці брата твого, а колоди, яка у твоєму оці, не помічаєш?
“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
[Або] як можеш сказати братові своєму: Брате, дозволь я вийму скалку з твого ока! — а не бачиш тієї колоди, яка у твоєму оці? Лицеміре, вийми спочатку колоду з власного ока, а тоді побачиш, як вийняти скалку з ока брата твого.
“For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.
Адже немає доброго дерева, яке родило б поганий плід, ані поганого дерева, яке родило би добрий плід.
“For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.
Бо кожне дерево пізнається зі свого плоду; з терену не збирають смокви, а з глоду не збирають винограду.
“The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.
Добра людина з доброго скарбу [свого] серця виносить добро, а погана — зі злого [скарбу свого серця] виносить зло, бо чим переповнене серце, те промовляють уста!
Builders and Foundations
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Чому Мене кличете: Господи, Господи! — а не робите того, що Я кажу?
“Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:
Кожний, хто приходить до Мене і слухає слово Моє та виконує його, — скажу вам, до кого він подібний:
he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
він подібний до людини, яка будує дім, котра викопала, поглибила і поклала основу на скелі; коли сталася повінь, підступила ріка до цього дому, та не змогла зрушити його, бо він був добре збудований.
“But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
А той, хто почув і не виконав, подібний до людини, яка збудувала дім на землі — без основи. І підступила до нього ріка, дім відразу завалився, — велика стала з нього руїна!
