New King James Version

  • Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant

When He had completed all His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
  • Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant

Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum.
  • And a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.
  • And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die.
  • When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave.
  • So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant.
  • When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him;
  • And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving,
  • for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.”
  • “for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”
  • Now Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof;
  • Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.
  • for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
  • Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
  • “For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”
  • For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.
  • Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
  • When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”
  • When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.
  • And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well [a]who had been sick.
  • Soon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
  • Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain

Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.
  • Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her.
  • And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.
  • When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.”
  • When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
  • And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”
  • Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
  • The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
  • So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.
  • Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people!”
  • Then fear [b]came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.”
  • This report concerning Him went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.
  • And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

  • A Deputation from John

The disciples of John reported to him about all these things.
  • John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus

Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.
  • Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”
  • And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to [c]Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or [d]do we look for another?”
  • When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’”
  • When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ”
  • At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind.
  • And that very hour He cured many of [e]infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
  • And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.
  • Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
  • “Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”
  • And blessed is he who is not [f]offended because of Me.”
  • When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
  • When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
  • “But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!
  • But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.
  • “But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet.
  • But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
  • “This is the one about whom it is written,
‘BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.’
  • This is he of whom it is written:
‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
  • “I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
  • For I say to you, among those born of women there is [g]not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
  • When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God’s justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
  • And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors [h]justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
  • But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.
  • But the Pharisees and [i]lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
  • “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
  • [j]And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like?
  • “They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
  • They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
    And you did not dance;
    We mourned to you,
    And you did not weep.’
  • “For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’
  • For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
  • “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
  • The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [k]winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
  • “Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
  • But wisdom is justified by all her children.”
  • Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
  • A Sinful Woman Forgiven

Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat.
  • And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,
  • And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,
  • and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
  • and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
  • Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”
  • Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

  • Parable of Two Debtors

And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.”
  • And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
So he said, “Teacher, say it.”
  • “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
  • “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
  • “When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?”
  • And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
  • Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
  • Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”
  • Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
  • Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
  • “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.
  • You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.
  • “You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.
  • You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.
  • “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”
  • Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”
  • Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”
  • Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
  • Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?”
  • And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
  • And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
  • Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
