The Tongue Is a Fire

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

Не багато-хто ставайте, братти мої, учителями, знавши, що більший о́суд при́ймемо.

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Бо багато ми всі помиляємось. Коли хто не помиляється в слові, то це муж досконалий, спроможний прибо́ркувати й усе тіло.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

От і ко́ням вкладаєм узде́чки до ро́та, щоб корилися нам, і ми всім їхнім тілом керуємо.

Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

От і кораблі, хоч які величезні та гнані вітра́ми жорсто́кими, проте найменшим сте́рном скеро́вуються, куди хоче стерни́чий.

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.
See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

Так само й язик, — малий член, але хва́литься ве́льми! Ось маленький огонь, а запалює величезного ліса!

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

І язик — то огонь. Як світ неправости, поста́влений так поміж нашими членами, язик скверни́ть усе тіло, запалює круг життя, і сам запалюється від геєнни.

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

Бо всяка природа звірі́в і пташо́к, гадів і мо́рських потвор прибо́ркується, і прибо́ркана буде природою лю́дською,

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

та не може ніхто із людей язика вгамува́ти, — він зло безупи́нне, він повний отрути смерте́льної!

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

Ним ми благословляємо Бога й Отця, і ним проклинаєм людей, що створені на Божу подобу.

from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Із тих самих уст виходить благослове́ння й прокля́ття. Не повинно, брати́ мої, щоб так це було́!

Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

Хіба з одно́го отвору виходить вода солодка й гірка́?

Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Хіба може, бра́ти мої, фіґове дерево родити оливки, або виноград — фіґи? Солодка вода не тече з солонця́.

Wisdom from Above

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

Хто мудрий і розумний між вами, нехай він покаже діла́ свої в ла́гідній мудрості добрим поводженням!

14

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Коли ж гірку́ заздрість та сварку ви маєте в серці своєму, то не величайтесь та не говоріть неправди на правду, —

15

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

15

це не мудрість, що ніби зве́рху походить вона, але земна, тілесна та де́монська.

16

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

Бо де за́здрість та сварка, там бе́злад та всяка зла річ!

17

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

17

А мудрість, що зверху вона, насамперед чиста, а потім спокійна, ла́гідна, покірлива, повна милосердя та добрих пло́дів, безстороння та нелукава.

18

And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

18

А плід праведности сіється творцями миру.
