The Tongue Is a Fire

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

Брати мої, хай не буде багато таких, які стають учителями, знаючи, що приймемо більший осуд.

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Адже всі ми багато грішимо. Коли ж хто не грішить словом, — то досконалий чоловік, здатний приборкати й усе тіло.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Ось і коням вкладаємо вуздечку в рот, щоб нам корилися, і керуємо всім їхнім тілом.

Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

Ось і кораблі, хоч які великі та гнані бурхливими вітрами, але керуються малим стерном, куди [лише] хоче стерновий.

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.
See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

Так само і язик: хоч і малий орган, а дуже хвалиться. Ось який невеликий вогонь, а спалює такий великий ліс!

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

І язик — це вогонь, світ неправди. Язик [так] поставлений між нашими органами, що опоганює все тіло і підпалює круг життя, а його самого запалює геєна [1].

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

Адже всякий рід звірів і птахів, плазунів і риб приборкується, — вони освоєні людською природою.

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

А язика ніхто з людей не може приборкати; він — зло невгамовне, повний смертоносної отрути.

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

Ним благословляємо Господа й Отця і ним проклинаємо людей, які створені за Божою подобою.

from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

З тих самих уст виходить благословення і прокляття. Не годиться, брати мої, щоб так воно було!

Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

Хіба з одного джерела виходить солодка й гірка вода?

Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Чи може, брати мої, смоківниця родити оливки, а виноградна лоза — смокви? І солончак не може давати солодкої води.

Wisdom from Above

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

Хто мудрий і досвідчений між вами? Нехай покаже свої діла в лагідній мудрості доброго способу життя.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Коли ж маєте гірку заздрість і суперництво у ваших серцях, не хваліться і не говоріть неправди на правду.

15

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

15

Це не та мудрість, яка сходить згори, а земна, душевна, бісівська.

16

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

Тому що де заздрість та чвари, там безладдя і всяке лихе діло.

17

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

А та мудрість, що згори, насамперед чиста, потім мирна, лагідна, покірна, повна милосердя і добрих плодів, безстороння, нелукава.

18

And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Адже плід праведності сіється в мирі — і творцями миру.
