Darby Bible Translation

  • The Tablets Rewritten

“At that time the LORD said to me, ‘Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone like the former ones, and come up to Me on the mountain, and make an ark of wood for yourself.
  • The New Tablets of Stone

    At that time Jehovah said unto me, Hew for thyself two tables of stone like the first, and come up unto me into the mountain, and make thee an ark of wood;
  • ‘I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered, and you shall put them in the ark.’
  • and I will write on the tables the words that were on the first tables which thou didst break, and thou shalt lay them in the ark.
  • “So I made an ark of acacia wood and cut out two tablets of stone like the former ones, and went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hand.
  • And I made an ark of acacia-wood, and hewed two tables of stone like the first, and went up the mountain with the two tables in my hand.
  • “He wrote on the tablets, like the former writing, the Ten Commandments which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me.
  • And he wrote on the tables, as the first writing, the ten words which Jehovah spoke unto you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire, on the day of the assembly, and Jehovah gave them unto me.
  • “Then I turned and came down from the mountain and put the tablets in the ark which I had made; and there they are, as the LORD commanded me.”
  • And I turned and came down from the mountain, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; -- and they are there, as Jehovah commanded me.
  • (Now the sons of Israel set out from Beeroth Bene-jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died and there he was buried and Eleazar his son ministered as priest in his place.
  • (And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth-Bene-Jaakan to Moserah: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son exercised the priesthood in his stead.
  • From there they set out to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of brooks of water.
  • From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of water-brooks.)
  • At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve Him and to bless in His name until this day.
  • At that time Jehovah separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, to stand before Jehovah to do service unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.
  • Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God spoke to him.)
  • Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; Jehovah is his inheritance, according as Jehovah thy God told him.
  • “I, moreover, stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights like the first time, and the LORD listened to me that time also; the LORD was not willing to destroy you.
  • But I stood upon the mountain according to the former days, forty days and forty nights; and Jehovah listened unto me also at that time: Jehovah would not destroy thee.
  • “Then the LORD said to me, ‘Arise, proceed on your journey ahead of the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’
  • And Jehovah said unto me, Rise up, take thy journey before the people, that they may enter in and possess the land, which I swore unto their fathers to give unto them.
  • “Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
  • A Call to Obedience

And now, Israel, what doth Jehovah thy God require of thee, but to fear Jehovah thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve Jehovah thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
  • and to keep the LORD’S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?
  • to keep the commandments of Jehovah, and his statutes, which I command thee this day, for thy good?
  • “Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it.
  • Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to Jehovah thy God; the earth and all that is therein.
  • “Yet on your fathers did the LORD set His affection to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as it is this day.
  • Only, Jehovah took pleasure in thy fathers, to love them, and he chose their seed after them, [even] you, out of all the peoples, as it is this day.
  • “So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer.
  • Circumcise then the foreskin of your heart, and stiffen your neck no more.
  • “For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.
  • For Jehovah your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty and the terrible, who regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward;
  • “He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
  • who executeth the judgment of the fatherless and the widow, and loveth the stranger, to give him food and clothing.
  • “So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
  • And ye shall love the stranger; for ye have been strangers in the land of Egypt.
  • “You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name.
  • Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God; him thou shalt serve, and unto him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
  • “He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.
  • He is thy praise, and he is thy God, who hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
  • “Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.
  • With seventy souls thy fathers went down into Egypt; and now Jehovah thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.
