New American Standard Bible

English Standard Version

  • Unity of the Spirit

    Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
  • Unity in the Body of Christ

    I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
  • with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
  • with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
  • being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
  • eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
  • There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
  • There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call —
  • one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
  • one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
  • one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
  • one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
  • But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
  • But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
  • Therefore it says,
    “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH,
    HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES,
    AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN.”
  • Therefore it says,
    “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
    and he gave gifts to men.”a
  • (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?
  • (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?b
  • He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
  • He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)
  • And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
  • And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherdsc and teachers,d
  • for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
  • to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
  • until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
  • until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,e to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
  • As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
  • so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
  • but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
  • Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
  • from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
  • from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

  • The Christian’s Walk

    So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
  • The New Life

    Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
  • being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
  • They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
  • and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
  • They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
  • But you did not learn Christ in this way,
  • But that is not the way you learned Christ! —
  • if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus,
  • assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
  • that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,
  • to put off your old self,f which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
  • and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
  • and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
  • and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
  • and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
  • Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.
  • Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
  • BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
  • Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
  • and do not give the devil an opportunity.
  • and give no opportunity to the devil.
  • He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.
  • Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
  • Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
  • Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
  • Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
  • And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
  • Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
  • Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
  • Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
  • Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
