Samson’s Weakness

When it was told to the Gazites, saying, “Samson has come here,” they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the gate of the city. And they kept silent all night, saying, “Let us wait until the morning light, then we will kill him.”
А аззеянам донесли, говорячи: „Самсон прийшов сюди!“ І оточи́ли вони, і чатували на нього всю ніч у міські́й брамі. І вони тихо поводилися всю ніч, говорячи: „Будемо чатувати аж до ранішнього світу, — і заб'ємо його“.
Now Samson lay until midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two posts and pulled them up along with the bars; then he put them on his shoulders and carried them up to the top of the mountain which is opposite Hebron.
І лежав Самсон аж до пі́вночі. А опі́вночі встав, і схопи́в за двері місько́ї брами та за оби́два бічні́ одві́рки, та й вирвав їх ра́зом із за́сувом, і поклав на свої плечі, і виніс їх на верхі́в'я гори, що навпроти Хевро́ну.
After this it came about that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
І сталося потому, і покохав він жінку в долині Сорек, а ім'я́ їй Делі́ла.
The lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Entice him, and see where his great strength lies and how we may overpower him that we may bind him to afflict him. Then we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.”
І прийшли до неї филистимські воло́дарі, та й сказали їй: „Намов його та й побач, — у чо́му його велика сила, і чим переможемо його та зв'яжемо його, щоб упокори́ти його? А ми кожен дамо́ тобі тисячу й сто шеклів срібла“.
So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength is and how you may be bound to afflict you.”
І сказала Деліла до Самсона: „Розкажи мені, у чо́му твоя велика сила, і чим можна зв'язати, щоб упокори́ти тебе?“
Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh cords that have not been dried, then I will become weak and be like any other man.”
І сказав їй Самсон: „Якщо зв'яжуть мене сімома́ мокрими шну́рами, що ще не ви́сушені, то осла́бну та й стану, як кожен із людей“.
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh cords that had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
І прине́сли їй филистимські володарі сім мокрих шну́рів, що ще не були ви́сушені, а вона зв'язала його ними.
Now she had men lying in wait in an inner room. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he snapped the cords as a string of tow snaps when it touches fire. So his strength was not discovered.
А за́сідка сиділа в неї в іншій кімна́ті. І вона сказала до нього: „Филисти́мляни на тебе, Самсоне!“ І він розірва́в ті шну́ри, як розривається нитка з кло́ччя, коли понюхає огню. І не пізнана була його сила.
Then Delilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have deceived me and told me lies; now please tell me how you may be bound.”
І сказала Делі́ла до Самсона: „Оце ти обмани́в мене, і говорив мені лжу. Розкажи ж мені тепер, чим можна зв'язати тебе?“
He said to her, “If they bind me tightly with new ropes which have not been used, then I will become weak and be like any other man.”
А він їй сказав: „Якщо справді зв'яжуть мене нови́ми су́каними шну́рами, якими не робилася робота, то ослабну й стану, як кожен із людей“.
So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” For the men were lying in wait in the inner room. But he snapped the ropes from his arms like a thread.
І взяла Деліла нові́ шну́ри, та й зв'язала його ними, і сказала до нього: „Филисти́мляни на тебе, Самсоне!“ А за́сідка сиділа в іншій кімна́ті. І він зірвав їх зо своїх плече́й, немов нитку.
Then Delilah said to Samson, “Up to now you have deceived me and told me lies; tell me how you may be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my hair with the web [and fasten it with a pin, then I will become weak and be like any other man.”
І сказала Деліла Самсонові: „Досі ти обма́нював мене, і говорив мені лжу. Розкажи ж мені, чим можна зв'язати тебе?“ А він їй сказав: „Якщо утчеш сім ку́черів моєї голови з основою“.
So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks of his hair and wove them into the web]. And she fastened it with the pin and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin of the loom and the web.
І вона прибила їх ткацьким клинко́м, та й сказала до нього: „Филистимляни на тебе, Самсоне!“ А він обудився зо сну́ свого, та й вирвав ткацького клинка́ ткани́ни та осно́ву.
Delilah Extracts His Secret
Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have deceived me these three times and have not told me where your great strength is.”
І сказала вона до нього: „Як ти говориш: кохаю тебе, а серце твоє не зо мною? Оце тричі обмани́в ти мене, і не розповів мені, у чо́му твоя велика сила“.
It came about when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him, that his soul was annoyed to death.
І сталося, коли вона докуча́ла йому своїми словами по всі дні, та напирала на нього, то знетерпели́вилася душа його на смерть.
So he told her all that was in his heart and said to her, “A razor has never come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will leave me and I will become weak and be like any other man.”
І виложив він їй усе серце своє, та й сказав їй: „Бритва не торкалась моєї голови, бо я Божий назоре́й від утро́би своєї матері. Якщо я буду ого́лений, то відступить від мене сила моя, і я ослабну, та й стану, як кожна люди́на“.
When Delilah saw that he had told her all that was in his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up once more, for he has told me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands.
І побачила Деліла, що він розповів їй усе своє серце, і послала й покликала филистимських воло́дарів, говорячи: „Прийдіть і цим ра́зом, бо він розповів мені все своє серце“. І прийшли до неї филистимські воло́дарі, і зне́сли срібло в своїй руці.
She made him sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his hair. Then she began to afflict him, and his strength left him.
А вона приспала його на колінах своїх, і покликала чоловіка та й наказала оголи́ти сім ку́черів його голови. І став він сла́бнути, і відступила від нього сила його.
She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
І сказала вона: „Филисти́мляни на тебе, Самсоне!“ І збудився він зо сну́ свого та й сказав: „Вийду я, як раз-у-раз, і стрясуся“. А він не знав, що Господь відступився від нього.
Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze chains, and he was a grinder in the prison.
І взяли́ його филисти́мляни, та й ви́брали очі йому́. І вони звели́ його до Га́зи, і зв'язали його мі́дяними ланцюга́ми, і він молов у домі ув'язнених.
However, the hair of his head began to grow again after it was shaved off.
А волос голови його зачав рости по тому, як був він ого́лений.
Now the lords of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice, for they said,
“Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hands.”
“Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hands.”
А филистимські воло́дарі зібра́лися, щоб прине́сти велику жертву Даґо́нові, своєму бо́гові, та повесели́тися. І сказали вони: „Наш бог передав у нашу ру́ку Самсо́на, ворога нашого“.
When the people saw him, they praised their god, for they said,
“Our god has given our enemy into our hands,
Even the destroyer of our country,
Who has slain many of us.”
“Our god has given our enemy into our hands,
Even the destroyer of our country,
Who has slain many of us.”
І бачив його народ, і хвалили своїх богів, і говорили: „Наш бог передав у нашу руку нашого ворога та спустоши́теля нашого кра́ю, який наші тру́пи намно́жив“.
It so happened when they were in high spirits, that they said, “Call for Samson, that he may amuse us.” So they called for Samson from the prison, and he entertained them. And they made him stand between the pillars.
І сталося, коли їхнє серце звеселилося, то сказали вони: „Покличте Самсона, і нехай він посміши́ть нас“. І покликали Самсона з дому ув'я́знених, і він витіва́в жарти перед ними, а вони поставили його поміж стовпа́ми.
Then Samson said to the boy who was holding his hand, “Let me feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean against them.”
І сказав Самсо́н юнако́ві, що держав його за руку: „Пусти мене, і дай доторкнутися мені, до тих стовпі́в, що на них цей дім стоїть міцно, і нехай я обіпру́ся на них“.
Now the house was full of men and women, and all the lords of the Philistines were there. And about 3,000 men and women were on the roof looking on while Samson was amusing them.
А той дім був повен чоловіків та жіно́к, і туди зібралися всі филистимські воло́дарі, а на даху́ було близько трьох тисяч чоловіків та жіно́к, що приглядалися до жартів Самсона.
Samson Is Avenged
Then Samson called to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me just this time, O God, that I may at once be avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.”
І кли́кнув Самсон до Господа, та й сказав: „Владико Господи, згадай же про мене, та зміцни мене тільки цього ра́зу, Боже, і нехай я пімщу́ филисти́млянам одну пімсту за дво́є очей своїх!“
Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and braced himself against them, the one with his right hand and the other with his left.
І обняв Самсон оби́два середи́нні стовпи́, що на них міцно стояв той дім, і обпе́рся на них, — на одно́го прави́цею своєю, а на одно́го ліви́цею своєю.
And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” And he bent with all his might so that the house fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he killed in his life.
І сказав Самсон: „Нехай помру́ я ра́зом із филисти́млянами!“ І він з великою силою сперся на стовпи, — і впав той дім на володарів та на ввесь той наро́д, що в ньому. І були ті померлі, що він повбивав їх при своїй смерті, численні́ші за тих, що повбивав їх за свого життя.
Then his brothers and all his father’s household came down, took him, brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. Thus he had judged Israel twenty years.
І зійшли його брати́ та ввесь дім його батька, і поне́сли його, і ви́несли та й поховали його між Цор'а та між Ештаолом у гро́бі Мано́аха, батька його. А він судив Ізраїля двадцять літ.
