Mourning Lost Tribe
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, “None of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin in marriage.”

І присягнув Ізра́їльтянин в Міцпі, говорячи: „Жоден із нас не дасть своєї дочки́ Веніяминові за жінку!“
So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.
І посхо́дився народ до Бет-Елу, та й сидів там аж до вечора перед Божим лицем. І підне́сли вони го́лос свій, та й плакали плаче́м великим.
They said, “Why, O LORD, God of Israel, has this come about in Israel, so that one tribe should be missing today in Israel?”
I сказали вони: „Чому, Господи, Боже Ізраїлів, сталося це між Ізраїлем, щоб сьогодні бракувало з Ізраїля одне пле́м'я?“
It came about the next day that the people arose early and built an altar there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
І сталося назавтра, і встав рано наро́д, та й збудували же́ртівника, і прине́сли цілопа́лення та мирні жертви.
Then the sons of Israel said, “Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?” For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD at Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.”
І сказали Ізраїлеві сини: „Хто зо всіх Ізраїлевих племен не ввійшов до зборів до Господа? Бо та прися́га була велика на того, хто не прийшов до Господа, до Міцпи, говорячи: „Такий буде конче забитий“.
And the sons of Israel were sorry for their brother Benjamin and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel today.
І жалували Ізраїлеві сини за Веніямином, своїм братом, та й сказали: „Сьогодні відру́бане з Ізраїля одне пле́м'я!
“What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?”
Що́ ми зробимо їм, позосталим, щодо жіно́к? А ми присягнули Господом, що не дамо їм із дочо́к наших за жіно́к“.
Provision for Their Survival
And they said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD at Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
І сказали вони: „Яке́ одне́ з Ізраїлевих племен не прийшло́ до Господа до Міцпи?“ Аж ось ви́явилось, що з Явешу ґілеадського ніхто не прихо́див до табо́ру на збори.
For when the people were numbered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.
І був переглянений народ, а оце — не було там нікого з ме́шканців Явешу ґілеадського!
And the congregation sent 12,000 of the valiant warriors there, and commanded them, saying, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.
І послала громада туди дванадцять тисяч чоловіка хоробрих людей, і наказали їм, говорячи: „Ідіть, і повбиваєте ме́шканців ґілеадського Явешу вістрям меча, — і жінок і дітей.
“This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every man and every woman who has lain with a man.”
А це та річ, що ви зробите: Кожного чоловіка та кожну жінку, що пізна́ла чолові́ка, зробите закляттям“.
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
І знайшли вони з ме́шканців ґілеадського Явешу чотири сотні дівчат паннів, що не пізна́ли чолові́ка, і спровадили їх до табо́ру в Шіло́, що в ханаанському Кра́ї.
Then the whole congregation sent word and spoke to the sons of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.
І послала вся та громада, а ті говорили до Веніяминових синів, що в Села-Ріммоні, та й кликнули їм: „Мир!“
Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had kept alive from the women of Jabesh-gilead; yet they were not enough for them.
І вернувся Веніямин того ча́су, і дали́ їм тих жінок, яких позоставили при житті, із жінок ґілеадського Явешу. Та не знайшли їм до́сить.
And the people were sorry for Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
А народ той жалував за Веніямином, бо Господь зробив проло́ма в Ізраїлевих племенах.
Then the elders of the congregation said, “What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?”
І сказали старші́ громади: „Що́ ми зробимо позосталим щодо жінок? Бо вигублена жінка з Веніямина“.
They said, “There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe will not be blotted out from Israel.
І сказали вони: „Останки насліддя — для Веніямина, і не буде витерте пле́м'я з Ізраїля.
“But we cannot give them wives of our daughters.” For the sons of Israel had sworn, saying, “Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.”
А ми не можемо дати їм жінок із наших дочо́к, бо Ізраїлеві сини присягли́, говорячи: „Прокля́тий, хто дає жінку Веніяминові!“
So they said, “Behold, there is a feast of the LORD from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south side of Lebonah.”
І сказали вони: „Ось буває рік-у-рік свято Господнє в Шіло́, що на північ від Бет-Елу, на схід сонця від дороги, що провадить з Бет-Елу до Сихему, і з пі́вдня від Левони“.
And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,
І наказали вони Веніяминовим синам, говорячи: „Ідіть, і будете чатува́ти в виноградниках.
and watch; and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to take part in the dances, then you shall come out of the vineyards and each of you shall catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
І побачите, аж ось до́чки Шіла́ вийдуть танцювати та́нці, то ви вийдете з виноградників, та й схо́пите собі кожен свою жінку з дочо́к Шіла́, і пі́дете в Веніяминів край.
“It shall come about, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we shall say to them, ‘Give them to us voluntarily, because we did not take for each man of Benjamin a wife in battle, nor did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’”
І буде, коли їхні батьки або їхні брати при́йдуть до нас сваритися, то ми скажемо їм: Змилуйтеся над ними, бо не взяли́ ми для кожного з них жінку на війні, і ви не дали́ їм, тому цього ча́су ви винні“.
The sons of Benjamin did so, and took wives according to their number from those who danced, whom they carried away. And they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the cities and lived in them.
І зробили так Веніяминові сини, і взяли жінок за числом своїм із тих, що танцювали, що їх вони викрали. І пішли вони, і вернулися до наді́лу свого, і побудували міста́, та й осілися в них.
The sons of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and each one of them went out from there to his inheritance.
І порозхо́дилися звідти Ізраїлеві сини того ча́су кожен до племени свого та до роду свого, і пішли звідти кожен до спа́дку свого.
