Jonathan’s Victory
Now the day came that Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who was carrying his armor, “Come and let us cross over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.

Одно́го дня сказав Йоната́н, син Саулів, до слуги, свого зброєно́ші: „Ходім, і перейдімо до филистимської зало́ги, що з того бо́ку“. А батькові своєму він цього не розповів.
Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron. And the people who were with him were about six hundred men,
А Саул сидів на кінці згір'я під грана́товим де́ревом, що в Міґроні. А народу, що з ним, було близько шости сотень чоловіка.
and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the LORD at Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.
А Ахійя, син Ахітува, брата Іхавода, сина Пінхаса, сина Ілі́я, священика в Шіло́, носив ефо́да. А народ не знав, що пішов Йоната́н.
Between the passes by which Jonathan sought to cross over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp crag on the one side and a sharp crag on the other side, and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
А між тими переходами, що Йоната́н хотів перейти до филистимської залоги, була зубча́ста скеля з цього боку перехо́ду й зубчаста скеля з того боку переходу. А ім'я́ одній Боцец, а ім'я другій Сенне.
The one crag rose on the north opposite Michmash, and the other on the south opposite Geba.
Один зуб — скеля — стовп із пі́вночі, навпроти Міхмашу, а один із пі́вдня, навпроти Ґеви.
Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor, “Come and let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; perhaps the LORD will work for us, for the LORD is not restrained to save by many or by few.”
І сказав Йонатан до слуги, свого зброєно́ші: „Ходім, і перейді́мо до сторо́жі тих необрізаних, може Господь зробить поміч для нас, — бо Господе́ві нема перешкоди спасати через багатьох чи через небагатьох“.
His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart; turn yourself, and here I am with you according to your desire.”
І сказав йому його зброєно́ша: „Роби все, що на серці твоїм! Звертай собі, — ось я з тобою, куди хоче серце твоє“.
Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will cross over to the men and reveal ourselves to them.
І сказав Йонатан: „Ось ми приходимо до тих людей, і покажемось їм.
“If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you’; then we will stand in our place and not go up to them.
Якщо вони скажуть до нас так: Стійте тихо, аж ми при́йдемо до вас, — то ми станемо на своєму місці, і не піді́ймемося до них.
“But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the LORD has given them into our hands; and this shall be the sign to us.”
А якщо вони скажуть так: Підіймі́ться до нас, — то піді́ймемося, бо Господь дав їх у нашу руку. Це для нас буде зна́ком“.
When both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, the Philistines said, “Behold, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.”
І вони обидва показалися филистимській сторо́жі. І сказали филисти́мляни: „Ось виходять із щі́лин євреї, що поховалися там“.
So the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor bearer and said, “Come up to us and we will tell you something.” And Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me, for the LORD has given them into the hands of Israel.”
І люди зало́ги відповіли́ Йоната́нові та його зброєноші та й сказали: „Підіймися до нас, — і ми вам щось скажемо!“ І сказав Йонатан зброєноші своєму: „Підіймайся за мною, бо Господь дав їх у Ізраїлеву руку!“
Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor bearer behind him; and they fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer put some to death after him.
І піднявся Йонатан на руках своїх та на ногах своїх, а за ним його зброєно́ша. І падали филисти́мляни перед Йонатаном, а його зброєноша добивав за ним.
That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor bearer made was about twenty men within about half a furrow in an acre of land.
І була́ перша пора́зка, що вдарив Йонатан та його зброєноша, близько двадцяти чоловіка, на половині скиби оброблюваного парою волів поля на день.
And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even the garrison and the raiders trembled, and the earth quaked so that it became a great trembling.
І стався споло́х у табо́рі, на полі, та в усьому народі. Зало́га та нищи́телі — затремтіли й вони. І задрижала земля, і знявся великий споло́х!
Now Saul’s watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude melted away; and they went here and there.
І побачили Саулові вартівники́ в Веніяминовій Ґів'ї, аж ось на́товп розпливається, і біжить сюди та туди.
Saul said to the people who were with him, “Number now and see who has gone from us.” And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.
І сказав Саул до народу, що був з ним: „Перегляньте й побачте, хто́ пішов від нас?“ І переглянули, аж ось нема Йонатана та його зброєноші.
Then Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God was at that time with the sons of Israel.
І сказав Саул до Ахійї: „Принеси Божого ковчега!“ Бо Божий ковчег був того дня з Ізраїлевими синами.
While Saul talked to the priest, the commotion in the camp of the Philistines continued and increased; so Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
І сталося, коли Саул говорив до священика, то замі́шання в филистимському табо́рі все більшало та ши́рилось. І сказав Саул до священика: „Спини свою руку!“
Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and came to the battle; and behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion.
І зібралися Саул та ввесь народ, що був із ним, і вони пішли аж до місця бо́ю, — аж ось меч кожного на його ближнього, замі́шання дуже велике!
Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines previously, who went up with them all around in the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
А між филистимлянами, як і давніш, були євреї, що поприхо́дили з ними з табо́ром, — і вони теж перейшли, щоб бути з Ізраїлем, що був із Саулом та Йоната́ном.
When all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, even they also pursued them closely in the battle.
А всі ізра́їльтяни, що ховалися в Єфремових гора́х, почули, що филисти́мляни втікають, і погналися за ними й вони до бо́ю.
So the LORD delivered Israel that day, and the battle spread beyond Beth-aven.
І спас Господь Ізраїля того дня. А бій перейшов аж за Бет-Евен.
Saul’s Foolish Order
Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day, for Saul had put the people under oath, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food before evening, and until I have avenged myself on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.
Та ізра́їльтянин був пригно́блений того дня. А Саул наклав клятву на наро́д, говорячи: „Прокля́тий той чоловік, що буде їсти хліб до вечора, поки я пімщу́ся на своїх ворогах.“ І ввесь той народ не їв хліба
All the people of the land entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.
І ввесь народ пішов до лісу, а там був мед на га́лявині.
When the people entered the forest, behold, there was a flow of honey; but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.
І ввійшов народ до то́го лісу, аж ось струмо́к меду! Та ніхто не простяг своєї руки до уст своїх, бо народ боявся прися́ги.
But Jonathan had not heard when his father put the people under oath; therefore, he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.
А Йоната́н не чув, коли батько його заприсягну́в був наро́д. І простягнув він кінець кия, що був у руці його, і вмочив його в стільни́к меду, та й підніс руку свою до уст своїх. І роз'ясни́лися очі йому!
Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly put the people under oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food today.’” And the people were weary.
А на це один із народу промовив і сказав: „Заприсягаючи, заприсяг твій батько наро́д, говорячи: Прокля́тий той чоловік, що буде їсти хліб сьогодні! І змучився від цього народ“.
Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See now, how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.
І сказав Йоната́н: „Знещасливив мій батько цю землю! Подивіться но, як роз'ясни́лися очі мої, коли я скуштува́в трохи цього меду.
“How much more, if only the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now the slaughter among the Philistines has not been great.”
А що, коли б народ сьогодні справді був їв зо здо́бичі своїх ворогів, що знайшов? Чи тепер не збільши́лася б пора́зка филисти́млян?“
They struck among the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very weary.
І били вони того дня між филистимлянами від Міхмашу аж до Айялону. А народ дуже змучився.
The people rushed greedily upon the spoil, and took sheep and oxen and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.
І кинувся народ на здо́бич, і позабирали худобу дрібну́ й худобу велику та телят, та й різали на землю. І їв народ із кров'ю!
Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD by eating with the blood.” And he said, “You have acted treacherously; roll a great stone to me today.”
І розповіли́ Саулові, кажучи: „Ось народ грішить проти Господа, — їсть із кров'ю!“ А той відказав: „Зрадили ви! Прикотіть до мене сьогодні великого ка́меня“.
Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Each one of you bring me his ox or his sheep, and slaughter it here and eat; and do not sin against the LORD by eating with the blood.’” So all the people that night brought each one his ox with him and slaughtered it there.
І сказав Саул: „Розійді́ться між людьми, та й скажіть їм: Приведіть до нас кожен вола свого, і кожен штуку дрібно́ї худобини, і заріжте тут. І будете їсти, і не згрішите́ проти Господа, якщо́ не будете їсти з кров'ю. І поприво́див увесь народ тієї ночі кожен вола свого своєю рукою, і порізали там.
And Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first altar that he built to the LORD.
І збудував Саул же́ртівника для Господа; його першого зачав він будувати, як жертівника для Господа.
Then Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” So the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.”
І сказав Саул: „Зійді́мо вночі за филистимлянами, та й винищуймо їх аж до ранко́вого світла, — і не полишімо між ними ніко́го“. А вони сказали: „Роби все, що добре в оча́х твоїх“. А священик сказав: „Приступі́мо тут до Бога!“
Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You give them into the hand of Israel?” But He did not answer him on that day.
І запитався Саул Бога: „Чи зійти за филисти́млянами? Чи даси їх в Ізраїлеву руку?“ Та Він не відповів йому того дня.
Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people, and investigate and see how this sin has happened today.
І сказав Саул: „Зійдіться сюди всі видатні́ народу, і пізнайте та побачте, у чо́му стався той гріх сьогодні.
“For as the LORD lives, who delivers Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But not one of all the people answered him.
Бо як живий Господь, що допоміг Ізраїлеві, — якщо він був хоча б на сині моїм Йонатані, то конче помре він!“ Та ніхто не відповів йому з усьо́го наро́ду.
Then he said to all Israel, “You shall be on one side and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”
І сказав він до всього Ізраїля: „Ви станете на один бік, а я та син мій Йоната́н на дру́гий бік“. І сказав той народ до Саула: „Зроби, що добре в оча́х твоїх!“
Therefore, Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Give a perfect lot.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.
І сказав Саул до Господа, Бога Ізраїля: „Дай же тумі́м!“ І був ви́явлений жеребком Йонатан та Саул, а народ повихо́див оправданим.
Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.
І сказав Саул: „Киньте поміж мною та поміж сином моїм Йонатаном“. І був ви́явлений Йоната́н.
Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” So Jonathan told him and said, “I indeed tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die!”
І сказав Саул до Йонатана: „Розкажи мені, що́ ти зробив?“ І розповів йому Йонатан і сказав: „Я справді скуштува́в кінцем кия, що був у руці моїй, трохи меду. Ось я помру за це!“
Saul said, “May God do this to me and more also, for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”
І сказав Саул: „Так нехай зробить Бог, і так нехай додасть, що конче помреш, Йоната́не!“
But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die, who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Far from it! As the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan and he did not die.
А народ сказав до Саула: „Чи помирати Йоната́нові, що зробив оце велике спасі́ння в Ізраїлі? Борони Боже! Як живий Господь, — не спаде́ волоси́на з голови його на землю, бо з Богом робив він цього дня!“ І визволив наро́д Йонатана, і він не помер.
Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.
І відійшов Саул від филисти́млян, а филисти́мляни пішли на своє місце.
Constant Warfare
Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, the sons of Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines; and wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment.
І здобув Саул царюва́ння над Ізраїлем, і воював навколо зо всіма́ своїми ворогами: з Моавом, і з синами Аммона, і з Едомом, і з царями Цови, і з филистимлянами. І скрізь, проти кого він оберта́вся, мав у́спіх.
He acted valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, and delivered Israel from the hands of those who plundered them.
І склав він військо, та й побив Амали́ка, і врятував Ізраїля з руки грабіжника.
Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan and Ishvi and Malchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab and the name of the younger Michal.
І були в Саула сини: Йонатан, і Їшві, і Малкішуя; а ім'я́ двох дочо́к його: ім'я́ ста́ршій Мера́в, а ім'я молодшій Мелхо́ла.
The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.
А ім'я́ Саулової жінки: Ахіноам, дочка Ахіма́аца. А ім'я́ провідника́ його ві́йська: Авне́р, син Нера, Саулового дя́дька.
Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
А Кіш — батько Саулів, а Нер — батько Авнера, син Авіїлів.
Now the war against the Philistines was severe all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he attached him to his staff.
І була сильна війна на филисти́млян за всіх Саулових днів. І коли Саул бачив якого чоловіка хороброго та якого сильного, то брав його до се́бе.
