  • The Lord’s Covenant With Abram

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
    “Do not be afraid, Abram.
    I am your shield,a
    your very great reward.b
  • God’s Covenant with Abram

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, [a]your exceedingly great reward.”
  • But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inheritc my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
  • But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I [b]go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
  • And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
  • Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one[c] born in my house is my heir!”
  • Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”
  • And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.”
  • He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars — if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspringd be.”
  • Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”
  • Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
  • And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
  • He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.”
  • Then He said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.”
  • But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?”
  • And he said, “Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?”
  • So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”
  • So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
  • Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.
  • Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.
  • Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
  • And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
  • As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
  • Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.
  • Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.
  • Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.
  • But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
  • And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
  • You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.
  • Now as for you, you shall [d]go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.
  • In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”
  • But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
  • When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
  • And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.
  • On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadie of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates —
  • On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying:
“To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates —
  • the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
  • the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites,
  • Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
  • the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
  • Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”
  • the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
