New King James Version

  • The Birth of Isaac

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.
  • Isaac Is Born

And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken.
  • Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.
  • For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
  • Abraham gave the name Isaaca to the son Sarah bore him.
  • And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him — whom Sarah bore to him — Isaac.[a]
  • When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.
  • Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
  • Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
  • Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
  • Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”
  • And Sarah said, “God has [b]made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.”
  • And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
  • She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”
  • Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.
  • Hagar and Ishmael Depart

So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.
  • But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,
  • And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.[c]
  • and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”
  • Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.”
  • The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.
  • And the matter was very [d]displeasing in Abraham’s sight because of his son.
  • But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspringb will be reckoned.
  • But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.
  • I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”
  • Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your [e]seed.”
  • Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.
  • So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and [f]a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
  • When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.
  • And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs.
  • Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, shec began to sob.
  • Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.
  • God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.
  • And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
  • Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
  • Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”
  • Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
  • Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.
  • God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.
  • So God was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
  • While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.
  • He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
  • The Treaty at Beersheba

At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.
  • A Covenant with Abimelech

And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phichol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do.
  • Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”
  • Now therefore, swear[g] to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt.”
  • Abraham said, “I swear it.”
  • And Abraham said, “I will swear.”
  • Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.
  • Then Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water which Abimelech’s servants had seized.
  • But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”
  • And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor had I heard of it until today.”
  • So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.
  • So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a [h]covenant.
  • Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,
  • And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
  • and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”
  • Then Abimelech asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?”
  • He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well.”
  • And he said, “You will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be my witness that I have dug this well.”
  • So that place was called Beersheba,d because the two men swore an oath there.
  • Therefore he called that place [i]Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
  • After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.
  • Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba. So Abimelech rose with Phichol, the commander of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.
  • Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.
  • Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.
  • And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
  • And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines many days.
