Pharaoh’s Dreams
When two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile,

when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat, and they grazed among the reeds.

After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank.
А слідом за ними вийшли з ріки інших сім корів — жалюгідні на вигляд і виснажені тілом — і паслися з коровами на березі ріки.
And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.
І сім жалюгідних та виснажених тілом корів з’їли сімох добірних, гарних на вигляд корів. І фараон прокинувся.
He fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain, healthy and good, were growing on a single stalk.
І вдруге побачив сон: ось сім колосків виростали з одного стебла — добірні й гарні;
After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted — thin and scorched by the east wind.
аж ось інших сім колосків — тонких та спалених суховієм — виросли після них;
The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy, full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up; it had been a dream.
і сім тонких та спалених суховієм колосків поглинули сім добірних, повних колосків. Фараон прокинувся — то був сон.
In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
А вранці сталося таке: його душа стривожилася, і він послав, щоби покликали всіх віщунів Єгипту і всіх його мудреців. Фараон розповів їм сон, але не було нікого, хто б його міг пояснити фараонові.
Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I am reminded of my shortcomings.
Та до фараона звернувся головний виночерпій, кажучи: Я пригадую собі сьогодні свій гріх.
Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he imprisoned me and the chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard.
Якось фараон розгнівався на своїх слуг і вкинув нас до в’язниці в тюрмі начальника в’язниці, — мене та головного пекаря.
Each of us had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.
Однієї ночі ми бачили сон, я і він, — кожний бачив свій власний сон.
Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream.
Був же там з нами молодий єврей, раб начальника в’язниці, і ми розповіли сни йому, а він їх нам пояснив.
And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was impaled.”
І сталося: так, як нам пояснив, — отак і збулося: мене відновили на моїй посаді, а того повісили.
So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.
Тоді фараон послав покликати Йосифа, і його вивели з в’язниці. Його підстригли, змінили його одяг, і він пішов до фараона.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
А фараон сказав Йосифові: Я бачив сон і немає нікого, хто би його міг пояснити. Та я чув, що про тебе кажуть, ніби ти, почувши сни, можеш їх пояснити.
“I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”
У відповідь Йосиф сказав фараонові: Без Бога не сповіститься фараонові спасіння.
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile,
А фараон промовив до Йосифа, кажучи: У моєму сні мені здалося, що я стояв на березі ріки,
when out of the river there came up seven cows, fat and sleek, and they grazed among the reeds.
і наче з ріки вийшло сім корів, гарних на вигляд і добірних тілом, і паслися в очереті.
After them, seven other cows came up — scrawny and very ugly and lean. I had never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt.
Аж ось за ними вийшли з ріки інших сім корів — нещасних і жалюгідних на вигляд та виснажених тілом, — гірших за них я не бачив в усій Єгипетській землі.
The lean, ugly cows ate up the seven fat cows that came up first.
І сім жалюгідних і худих корів з’їли сімох перших — гарних і добірних корів.
But even after they ate them, no one could tell that they had done so; they looked just as ugly as before. Then I woke up.
І попали ті в їхнє черево, але не було помітно, що потрапили в їхнє черево, бо вигляд у них залишився таким жалюгідним, як і на початку. Я прокинувся — та згодом заснув.
“In my dream I saw seven heads of grain, full and good, growing on a single stalk.
І знову побачив я у своєму сні, наче сім колосків виросли з одного стебла — повні та гарні.
After them, seven other heads sprouted — withered and thin and scorched by the east wind.
А після них виросли інші сім колосків, тонкі та спалені суховієм.
The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads. I told this to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to me.”
І сім тонких та спалених суховієм колосків поглинули сім гарних та повних колосків. Отже, я розповів сон віщунам — та не було нікого, хто пояснив би його мені.
Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.
І сказав Йосиф фараонові: сон фараона — один. Бог показав фараонові те, що Він чинить.
The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream.
Сім гарних корів — це сім років, і сім гарних колосків — також сім років. Сон фараона — один.
The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.
І сім худих корів, які виходили після них, — є сім років, і сім тонких та спалених суховієм колосків — це сім років голоду.
“It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.
Це саме те, про що я сказав фараонові: Бог показав фараонові те, що Він чинить.
Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,
Ось надходять сім років великого достатку в усій Єгипетській землі.
but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.
А після цього настане сім років голоду, і в усій Єгипетській землі забудуть про достаток, і голод спустошить землю.
The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe.
І не буде видно достатку на землі через голод, що настане після цього, бо він буде дуже тяжкий.
The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God, and God will do it soon.
А повторився сон фараонові двічі тому, що неодмінно здійсниться сказане Богом, і Бог не забариться з його виконанням.
“And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt.
Тому підшукай тепер мудрого й розумного чоловіка і постав його над Єгипетською землею.
Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.
Тож нехай так зробить фараон: нехай настановить на землі місцевих правителів, і хай збирають п’яту частину всього врожаю на Єгипетській землі за сім років достатку,
They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food.
і хай зберуть усі запаси їжі за цих сім сприятливих років, що надходять; нехай буде зібране зерно в розпорядження фараона. І ці запаси їжі хай зберігаються в містах.
This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”
І буде зроблено запас їжі в краю на сім років голоду, які настануть у Єгипетській землі, і не загине край від голоду.
The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials.
Сподобалися ці слова фараонові й усім його слугам.
І фараон сказав усім своїм слугам: Чи знайдемо таку людину, яка має в собі Божого Духа?
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.
Тож фараон сказав Йосифові: Оскільки Бог показав усе це тобі, то немає людини мудрішої та розумнішої за тебе.
You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.”
Ти будеш над моїм домом, і слів твоїх уст буде слухатися весь мій народ. Тільки престолом я буду вищий за тебе.
Joseph in Charge of Egypt
So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”
So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”
Ось, сьогодні, — сказав фараон Йосифові, — ставлю тебе над усією Єгипетською землею.
Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.
І, знявши перстень зі своєї руки, фараон заклав його Йосифові на руку й одягнув його в червоний одяг, а золотий ланцюжок одягнув йому на шию.
Він посадив його на свою другу колісницю, а вісник виголошував перед ним; і він поставив його над усією Єгипетською землею.
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your word no one will lift hand or foot in all Egypt.”
І сказав фараон Йосифові: Я — фараон! Без тебе ніхто не поворухне своєю рукою в усій Єгипетській землі.
І дав фараон Йосифові ім’я Псонтомфаних, а за дружину дав йому Асенету, дочку Петефрія, жерця міста Сонця.
Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout Egypt.
Йосифові ж було тридцять років, коли постав перед фараоном, царем Єгипту. Відійшов же Йосиф від присутності фараона і пройшов усю Єгипетську землю.
During the seven years of abundance the land produced plentifully.
І впродовж семи років достатку земля давала щедро родила;
Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities. In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it.
і Йосиф зібрав усі запаси їжі за сім років, коли був достаток у Єгипетському краю, і склав припаси в містах; у кожному місті він склав запаси полів, які були довкола нього.
Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea; it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.
І зібрав Йосиф зерна — як морського піску: так багато, що не можна було порахувати, бо не було числа.
Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
До того, як настали сім років голоду, у Йосифа було двоє синів, яких народила йому Асенет — дочка Пентефрія, жерця міста Сонця.
Первенцеві Йосиф дав ім’я Манасія [1] , бо сказав: Бог дав мені забути весь мій біль і все, що пов’язане з моїм батьком.
Ім’я ж другому дав Єфрем [2] , бо сказав: Розмножив мене Бог у землі моєї недолі.
The seven years of abundance in Egypt came to an end,
Та сім років достатку, що були в Єгипетській землі, минули
and the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the other lands, but in the whole land of Egypt there was food.
і почалися сім років голоду — як і казав Йосиф. І настав голод по всьому краю, а в усій Єгипетській землі був хліб.
When all Egypt began to feel the famine, the people cried to Pharaoh for food. Then Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do what he tells you.”
Та почався голод і по всій Єгипетській землі, тож народ заволав до фараона про хліб. А фараон сказав усім єгиптянам: Ідіть до Йосипа, і що лише скаже вам, — зробіть.
When the famine had spread over the whole country, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe throughout Egypt.
І голод був по всій землі. А Йосип відчинив усі зерносховища і продавав усім єгиптянам;
