Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.”
І прийшов Йосип, і розповів фараонові та й сказав: „Мій батько, і брати мої, і їхні отари, і худоба їх, і все їхнє прибули́ з ханаанського Кра́ю. І ось вони в країні Ґошен“.
He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.
І взяв він із своїх братів п'ятеро чоловіка, та й поставив їх перед лицем фараоновим.
Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”
“Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.”

І сказав фараон до братів його: „Яке ваше зайняття?“ А вони відказали фараонові: „Пастухи отари раби твої, — і ми, і наші батьки“.
They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”
І сказали вони фараонові: „Ми прибули́, щоб ме́шкати в кра́ї цім, нема бо паші для отари, що є в рабів твоїх, бо в ханаанському Краї тяжки́й голод. А тепер нехай же осядуть раби твої в країні Ґошен“.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you,
І промовив фараон до Йосипа, говорячи: „Батько твій та брати твої прибули́ до тебе.
and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.”
Єгипетьський край — він перед лицем твоїм. У найліпшім місці цього краю осади батька свого та братів своїх, — нехай осядуть у країні Ґошен. А коли знаєш, і між ними є здатні люди, то зроби їх зверхниками моєї череди“.
І привів Йосип батька свого Якова, та й поставив його перед лицем фараоновим. І Яків поблагословив фараона.

І промовив фараон до Якова: „Скільки днів ча́су життя твого?“
And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.”
А Яків сказав до фараона: „Днів ча́су мандрівки моєї — сто й тридцять літ. Короткі та лихі були дні ча́су життя мого, і не досягли вони днів ча́су життя батьків моїх у днях ча́су мандрівки їхньої“.
І Яків поблагословив фараона, та й вийшов від обличчя фараонового.
So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.
І осадив Йо́сип батька свого та братів своїх, і дав їм володіння в єгипетській країні, у найкращім місці цієї землі — у країні Рамесес, як наказав був фараон.
Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.
І постачав Йосип хліб для батька свого й братів своїх, та для всього дому свого батька відповідно до числа дітей.
Joseph and the Famine
There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.

А хліба не було в усім тім краї, бо голод став дуже тяжки́й. І ви́снажився єгипетський край та Край ханаанський через той голод.
Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.
І зібрав Йосип усе срібло, що знаходилося в єгипетськім краї та в Краї ханаанськім, за поживу, що вони купували. І Йосип вніс те срібло до фараонового дому.
When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.”
І вичерпалося срібло в краї єгипетськім та в Краї ханаанськім. І прибув увесь Єгипет до Йосипа, говорячи: „Дай же нам хліба! Нащо нам умирати перед тобою, тому́ що вичерпалося срібло?“
“Then bring your livestock,” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.”
А Йосип сказав: „Дайте свою худобу, а я дам вам за худобу вашу, коли вичерпалося срібло“.
So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
І вони припровадили худобу свою до Йосипа. І дав їм Йо́сип хліба за коні, і за отари, і за череди худоби, і за осли. І він того року постачав їм хліб за всю їхню худобу.
When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.
І скінчи́вся той рік, і вони прибули до нього другого року, та й сказали йому: „Не скажемо неправди перед паном своїм, — що вичерпалося срібло, а че́реди здобутку в нашого пана. Нічого не зосталося перед нашим паном, — хібащо наше тіло та наша земля!
Why should we perish before your eyes — we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.”
На́що ми маємо вмирати на очах твоїх, і ми, і наша земля? Купи нас та нашу землю за хліб, і бу́демо ми та наша земля рабами фараонові. А ти дай насіння, — і будемо жити, і не помремо́, а земля не опустіє“.
So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s,
І Йосип купив усю землю єгипетську для фараона, бо єгиптяни спро́дували кожен поле своє, посилився бо був голод між ними. І стала земля фараоновою.
А народ — він перепроваджував його до міст від кінця границі Єгипту й аж до кінця її.
However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
Тільки землі жерців не купив він, бо для жерців була устава жити на прибутки від фараона. І вони їли свій пай, що давав їм фараон, тому не продали́ своєї землі.
Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground.
І сказав Йосип до наро́ду: „Оце купив я сьогодні для фараона вас і землю вашу. Ось вам насіння, — і засійте землю.
But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
А настануть жнива́, то дасте п'яту частину фараонові, а чотири частині бу́дуть вам на насіння для поля й на їжу вам та тим, хто в домах ваших, та на їжу для ваших дітей“.
“You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”
А вони відказали: „Ти нас уде́ржав при житті. Нехай же зна́йдемо милість в очах свого пана, — і станемо рабами фараонові“.
So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt — still in force today — that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.
А Йо́сип поклав це за постанову на єгипетську землю аж до сьогоднішнього дня: на п'яту частину для фараона. Сама тільки земля жерців не стала фараоновою.
Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.
І осів Ізраїль в єгипетськім краї в країні Ґошен, і набули в нім володіння. І вони розродилися й сильно розмно́жилися.
Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.
І жив Яків в єгипетськім краї сімнадцять літ. І були́ дні Якова, літа життя його, сто літ і сорок і сім літ.
When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,
І набли́зилися дні Ізраїля до смерти. І кликнув він до сина свого до Йосипа, та й промовив йому: „Коли знайшов я милість в очах твоїх, поклади руку свою під стегно́ моє, і вчини зо мною милість та правду: Не поховай мене в Єгипті!
but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”
“I will do as you say,” he said.
“I will do as you say,” he said.
І ляжу я з батьками своїми, — і ти винесеш мене з Єгипту, і поховаєш мене в їхньому гробі“. А той відказав: „Я вчиню за словом твоїм“.
