The Man of God From Judah
By the word of the Lord a man of God came from Judah to Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering.

А ось чоловік Божий прийшов за Господнім словом із Юди до Бет-Елу. А Єровоам стояв при же́ртівнику, щоб кадити.
By the word of the Lord he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’ ”
І кликнув чоловік Божий при жертівнику за словом Господнім і сказав: „Же́ртівнику, же́ртівнику, — так сказав Господь: Ось у Давидовому домі наро́диться син, Йосія ім'я́ йому, і він на тобі принесе в жертву священиків па́гірків, що на тобі ка́дять, і кості лю́дські спа́ляться на тобі.
That same day the man of God gave a sign: “This is the sign the Lord has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.”
І дасть він того дня чудо, гово́рячи: Оце те чудо, про яке говорив Господь: Ось цей же́ртівник розпаде́ться, і ви́сиплеться попіл, що на ньому!“
When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back.
І сталося, як цар почув слова цього Божого чоловіка, що кликав до же́ртівника в Бет-Елі, то Єровоам простяг руку свою від же́ртівника, говорячи: „Схопі́ть його!“ І всохла рука йому, яку він простяг до нього, і він не міг вернути її до себе.
Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the Lord.
А же́ртівник розпався, і попіл висипався з жертівника, за тим чудом, що дав Божий чоловік за словом Господнім...
Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede with the Lord your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.
А цар відповів і сказав до Божого чоловіка: „Умилости́в лице Господа, Бога твого, і помолися за мене, і нехай ве́рнеться рука моя до мене!“ І чоловік Божий умилости́вив Господнє лице, і царська́ рука вернулася до нього, і була, як перед тим...
The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.”
І сказав цар до Божого чоловіка: „Увійди зо мною до дому й попоїж, і я дам тобі да́ра!“
But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water here.
А чоловік Божий сказав до царя: „Якщо ти даси мені пів дому свого, — не ввійду́ я з тобою, і не їстиму хліба, і не питиму води в цьому місці!..
For I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’ ”
Бо так наказано мені за словом Господнім, говорячи: Ти не їстимеш хліба, і не питимеш води, і не ве́рнешся дорогою, якою пішов!“
So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.
І пішов він іншою дорогою, і не вернувся тією дорогою, що нею прийшов був до Бет-Елу.
Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king.
А один старий пророк сидів у Бет-Елі. І прийшли його сини, і розповіли́ йому про ввесь чин, що зробив Божий чоловік сьогодні в Бет-Елі, про ті слова́, що він говорив до царя, — і оповіли́ їх своєму батькові.
Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken.
I промовив до них їхній батько: „Де́ ж та дорога, якою він пішов?“ А його сини бачили ту дорогу, якою пішов Божий чоловік, що прийшов був з Юди.
So he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it
І сказав він до синів своїх: „Осідла́йте мені осла!“ І вони осідлали йому осла, і він сів на нього.
and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
“I am,” he replied.
“I am,” he replied.
І поїхав він за Божим чоловіком, і знайшов його, як сидів під дубом. І сказав він до нього: „Чи ти той Божий чоловік, що прийшов із Юди?“ А той відказав: „Я“.
So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.”
І сказав він до нього: „Іди зо мною до дому та з'їж хліба!“
The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
А той відказав: „Не мо́жу вернутися з тобою та ввійти з тобою, і не їстиму хліба, і не питиму води з тобою в цьому місці!
I have been told by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’ ”
Бо було мені ска́зано за словом Господнім: Не їстимеш хліба й не питимеш там води, і не вернешся тією дорогою, якою ти йшов!“
The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (But he was lying to him.)
А той відказав йому: „І я пророк, як ти! А Ангол говорив мені за Господнім словом, кажучи: Заверни його з собою до дому свого́, і нехай він їсть хліб і нехай п'є во́ду“. Він же говорив йому неправду!
So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.
І він вернувся з ним, і їв хліб у його домі та пив воду.
While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the old prophet who had brought him back.
І сталося, як сиділи вони при столі, то було Господнє слово до пророка, що вернув його́.
He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have defied the word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you.
І він кликнув до Божого чоловіка, що прийшов із Юди, говорячи: „Так сказав Господь: Тому́, що був ти неслухняний Господнім нака́зам, і не додержував тієї заповіді, що наказав тобі Господь, Бог твій,
You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’ ”
і ти вернувся, і їв хліб та пив воду в місці, про яке Він говорив тобі: Не їж хліба й не пий води, — то не вві́йде твій, труп до гро́бу батьків твоїх!“
When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him.
І сталося, як той поїв хліба та напився, то він осідлав йому осла, тому проро́кові, що він вернув його.
As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it.
І той подався, та спіткав його на дорозі лев, та й забив його. І був ки́нений труп його на дорозі, а осел стояв при ньому, а той лев стояв при тру́пі.
Some people who passed by saw the body lying there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.
Аж ось прихо́дять люди, і побачили того тру́па, ки́неного на дорозі, та лева, що стояв при трупі. І вони прийшли́ й говорили в тім місті, де сидів стари́й пророк.
When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who defied the word of the Lord. The Lord has given him over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the Lord had warned him.”
І почув про це той пророк, що вернув його з дороги, та й сказав: „Це той Божий чоловік, що був неслухня́ний Господнім наказам, і Господь дав його левові, і він роздер його та вбив його за Господнім словом, що говорив йому“.
The prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they did so.
І сказав він до синів своїх, говорячи: „Осідлайте мені осла!“ І осідлали.
Then he went out and found the body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had neither eaten the body nor mauled the donkey.
І поїхав він, і знайшов його трупа, ки́неного на дорозі, й осла та лева, що стояли при трупі, — не з'їв той лев трупа й не роздер осла.
So the prophet picked up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him.
І підняв той пророк трупа Божого чоловіка, і поклав його на осла, та й вернув його. І ввійшов стари́й пророк до міста, щоб оплакати та поховати того.
Then he laid the body in his own tomb, and they mourned over him and said, “Alas, my brother!”
І поклав він його в своїм гробі, і плакали над ним: „Ой, брате мій!“
After burying him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
І сталося по його по́хороні, і сказав він до синів своїх, говорячи: „Коли я помру́, то поховаєте мене в гро́бі, що в ньому похований цей Божий чоловік. При костя́х його покладіть мої кості!
For the message he declared by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the towns of Samaria will certainly come true.”
Бо конче збудеться те слово, що він кликнув був за Господнім словом над тим же́ртівником, що в Бет-Елі, та над усіма жертівнико́вими місцями на па́гірках, що в містах самарійских.“
Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places.
По цій приго́ді Єровоа́м не зійшов зо своєї злої дороги, і настановля́в священиків па́гірків з усього народу, — хто хотів, той призначався, і ставав священиком па́гірків.
