    Micaiah Prophesies Against Ahab

    For three years there was no war between Aram and Israel.

    But in the third year Jehoshaphat king of Judah went down to see the king of Israel.

    І сталося третього року, і зійшов Йосафа́т, цар Юдин, до Ізраїлевого царя.

    The king of Israel had said to his officials, “Don’t you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us and yet we are doing nothing to retake it from the king of Aram?”

    І сказав Ізраїлів цар до своїх слуг: „Чи ви знаєте, що ґілеадський Рамот — наш? А ми мовчимо́, замість того, щоб забрати його з руки сирійського царя“.

    So he asked Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to fight against Ramoth Gilead?”
    Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”

    І сказав він до Йосафа́та: „Чи ти пі́деш зо мною на війну до ґілеадського Рамоту?“ А Йосафа́т відказав: „Я — як ти, народ мій — як народ твій, мої коні — як твої коні!“

    But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “First seek the counsel of the Lord.”

    І сказав Йосафа́т до Ізраїлевого царя: „Вивідай зараз слово Господнє!“

    So the king of Israel brought together the prophets — about four hundred men — and asked them, “Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?”
    “Go,” they answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”

    І зібрав Ізраїлів цар пророків, близько чотирьох сотень чоловіка, та й сказав до них: „Чи йти мені на війну на ґілеадський Рамот, чи занеха́ти?“ А ті відказали: „Іди, а Господь дасть його в цареву руку“.

    But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?”

    І сказав Йосафа́т: „Чи нема тут іще Господнього пророка, — і ви́відаємо від нього“.

    The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the Lord, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”
    “The king should not say such a thing,” Jehoshaphat replied.

    І сказав Ізраїлів цар до Йосафата: „Є ще один муж, щоб від нього вивідати Господа. Та я нена́виджу його, бо він не пророкує на мене добре, а тільки зле. Це Міхей, син Їмлин“. А Йосафа́т відказав: „Нехай цар не говорить так!“

    So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”

    І покликав Ізраїлів цар одного є́внуха, і сказав: „Приведи скоріш Міхея, Їмлиного сина!“

    Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them.

    І цар Ізраїлів та цар Юдин сиділи кожен на троні своїм, повби́рані в ша́ти при вході до брами Самарії, а всі пророки пророкували перед ними.

    Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns and he declared, “This is what the Lord says: ‘With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.’ ”

    А Седекія, Кенаанин син, зробив собі залізні ро́ги й сказав: „Так сказав Господь: Оцим будеш побивати сиріян аж до ви́гублення їх!“

    All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. “Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious,” they said, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”

    І всі пророки пророкували так, говорячи: Виходь до ґілеадського Рамоту, і пощастить тобі, — і Господь дасть його в цареву руку“.

    The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, “Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably.”

    А той послане́ць, що пішов покликати Міхея, говорив до нього, кажучи: „Ось слова тих пророків, — одноусто звіщають цареві добро. Нехай же буде слово твоє, як слово кожного з них, і ти говори́тимеш добре“.

    But Micaiah said, “As surely as the Lord lives, I can tell him only what the Lord tells me.”

    І сказав Міхей: „Як живий Господь, — те, що скаже мені Госпо́дь, я те говоритиму!“

    When he arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or not?”
    “Attack and be victorious,” he answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”

    І прийшов він до царя, а цар сказав до нього: „Міхе́ю, — чи пі́демо на війну́ до ґілеа́дського Рамо́ту, чи занеха́ємо?“ А той відказав йому: „Вийди, і пощастить тобі, — і Господь дасть у цареву руку“.

    The king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?”

    І сказав йому цар: „Аж скільки разі́в я заприсягав тебе, що ти не говоритимеш мені нічо́го, тільки правду в Ім'я́ Господа?“

    Then Micaiah answered, “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the Lord said, ‘These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.’ ”

    А той відказав: „Я бачив усього Ізраїля, розпоро́шеного по гора́х, немов ове́ць, що не мають пастуха́. І сказав Господь: Немає в них пана, — нехай ве́рнуться з миром кожен до дому свого“.

    The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?”

    І сказав Ізраїлів цар до Йосафа́та: „Чи ж не казав я тобі, — він не буде пророкувати мені доброго, а тільки лихе́?“

    Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left.

    А Міхей відказав: „Тому́ послухай Господнього слова: Бачив я Господа, що сидів на престолі Своїм, а все небесне ві́йсько стояло при Ньому з прави́ці Його та з ліви́ці Його.

    And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’
    “One suggested this, and another that.

    І сказав Господь: Хто́ намовить Ахава, і він вийде й упаде в ґілеадському Рамоті? І говорив той так, а той говорив так.

    Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’

    І вийшов дух, і став перед Господнім лицем та й сказав: Я намо́влю його! І сказав йому Господь: Чим?

    “ ‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.
    “ ‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.
    “ ‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’

    А той відказав: Я вийду й стану духом неправди в устах усіх його пророків. А Господь сказав: Ти намовиш, а також переможеш; вийди та й зроби так!

    “So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.”

    А тепер оце Господь дав духа неправди в уста всіх оцих пророків, а Господь говорив на тебе лихе́“...

    Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. “Which way did the spirit froma the Lord go when he went from me to speak to you?” he asked.

    І підійшов Седекія, Кенаанин син, і вдарив Міхея по щоці та й сказав: „Кудою це перейшов Дух Господній від мене, щоб говорити з тобою?“

    Micaiah replied, “You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room.”

    А Міхей сказав: „Ось ти побачиш це, коли вбіжиш до найдальшої кімна́ти, щоб схова́тися“.

    The king of Israel then ordered, “Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king’s son

    І сказав Ізраїлів цар: „Візьми Міхея, і відведи до Амона, начальника міста, та до Йоаша, царевого сина,

    and say, ‘This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.’ ”

    та й скажеш: Отак сказав цар: Посадіть оцього до в'язни́чного дому, і давайте йому їсти скупо хліба й скупо води, аж поки я не верну́ся з миром“.

    Micaiah declared, “If you ever return safely, the Lord has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Mark my words, all you people!”

    А Міхей відказав: „Якщо справді ве́рнешся ти з миром, то не говорив Господь через мене!“ І до того сказав: „Слухайте це, всі наро́ди!“

    Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead

    So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.

    І вийшов Ізраїлів цар та Йосафа́т, цар Юдин, до ґілеадського Рамо́ту.

    The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.

    І сказав Ізраїлів цар до Йосафата: „Я переберу́ся, і піду́ на бій, а ти вбери свої царські шати!“ І перебрався Ізраїлів цар, і пішов на бій.

    Now the king of Aram had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”

    А сирійський цар наказав керівника́м своїх колесни́ць, тридцятьом і двом, говорячи: „Не бу́дете воювати з мали́м та з великим, а тільки з самим Ізраїлевим царем“.

    When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, “Surely this is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but when Jehoshaphat cried out,

    І сталося, як керівники́ колесни́ць побачили Йосафа́та, то вони сказали: „Це дійсно Ізраїлів цар!“ І зайшли на нього, щоб воювати, а Йосафа́т закричав.

    the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel and stopped pursuing him.

    І сталося, як керівники́ колесни́ць побачили, що це не Ізраїлів цар, то поверну́ли від нього.

    But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king told his chariot driver, “Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been wounded.”

    А один чоловік зне́хотя натягнув лука, та й ударив Ізраїлевого царя між підв'яза́нням пояса та між па́нцерем. А той сказав своєму візникові: „Поверни назад, і виведи мене з табо́ру, бо я ране́ний“...

    All day long the battle raged, and the king was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans. The blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot, and that evening he died.

    І знявся бій того дня, а цар був поста́влений на колесни́ці проти Сирії, і помер уве́чорі. І кров із рани текла в колесни́цю.

    As the sun was setting, a cry spread through the army: “Every man to his town. Every man to his land!”

    А як сонце захо́дило, нісся крик у табо́рі такий: „Кожен — до міста свого́, і кожен — до кра́ю свого́!“

    So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there.

    І помер цар, і був приве́зений до Самарії. І поховали царя в Самарії.

    They washed the chariot at a pool in Samaria (where the prostitutes bathed),b and the dogs licked up his blood, as the word of the Lord had declared.

    І полоска́ли колесни́цю над ставом у Самарії, і пси лиза́ли його кров, а блудни́ці мили своє тіло, за словом Господнім, що Він говорив.

    As for the other events of Ahab’s reign, including all he did, the palace he built and adorned with ivory, and the cities he fortified, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

    А решта Ахавових діл, і все, що́ він зробив був, і дім зо слоно́вої кости, що він збудував, і всі міста́, які він побудува́в, — отож вони написані в Книзі Хроніки Ізраїлевих царів.

    Ahab rested with his ancestors. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

    І спочив Ахав із батька́ми своїми, а замість нього зацарюва́в син його Ахазія.

    Jehoshaphat King of Judah

    Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.

    А Йосафа́т, Асин син, зацарював над Юдою в четвертому році Ахава, царя Ізраїлевого.

    Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.

    Йосафат був віку тридцяти й п'яти літ, коли він зацарював, і двадцять і п'ять літ царював в Єрусалимі. А ім'я́ його матері — Азува, дочка́ Шілхи.

    In everything he followed the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.c

    І ходив він усією дорогою батька свого Аси, і не збо́чував із неї, щоб чинити добре в Господніх оча́х.

    Jehoshaphat was also at peace with the king of Israel.

    Тільки па́гірки не були пони́щені, — народ іще прино́сив жертви й кадив на па́гірках.

    As for the other events of Jehoshaphat’s reign, the things he achieved and his military exploits, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

    І Йосафат замирив з Ізраїлевим царем.

    He rid the land of the rest of the male shrine prostitutes who remained there even after the reign of his father Asa.

    А решта Йосафатових діл та лица́рськість його, що́ він чинив був та як воював, — отож вони написані в Книзі Хроніки Юдиних царів.

    There was then no king in Edom; a provincial governor ruled.

    А решту блудоді́їв, що позостава́лися за днів його батька Аси, він вигубив із Кра́ю.

    Now Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading shipsd to go to Ophir for gold, but they never set sail — they were wrecked at Ezion Geber.

    А царя не було в Едомі, — був намісник царів.

    At that time Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my men sail with yours,” but Jehoshaphat refused.

    А Йосафат наробив був таршіських кораблі́в, щоб піти до Офіру по золото, та не пішов, бо порозбива́лися кораблі при Ецйон-Ґевері.

    Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David his father. And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king.

    Тоді сказав Ахазія, син Ахавів, до Йосафата: „Нехай пі́дуть на корабля́х мої раби з рабами твоїми“. Та Йосафат не захотів.

    Ahaziah King of Israel

    Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years.

    І спочив Йосафат із своїми батьками. І був він похо́ваний в Місті Давида, свого батька, а замість нього зацарював син його Єгорам.

    He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

    Ахазія, Ахавів син, зацарював над Ізраїлем у Самарії, в сімнадцятому році Йосафата, Юдиного царя, і царював над Ізраїлем два роки.

    He served and worshiped Baal and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done.
