Darby Bible Translation

  • Athaliah and Joash

When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family.
  • Athaliah Queen in Judah

And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she rose up and destroyed all the royal seed.
  • But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehorama and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed.
  • But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain, [and hid] him and his nurse in the bedchamber; and they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.
  • He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.
  • And he was with her hid in the house of Jehovah six years. And Athaliah reigned over the land.
  • In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a hundred, the Carites and the guards and had them brought to him at the temple of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at the temple of the Lord. Then he showed them the king’s son.
  • Joash Anointed King in Judah

And in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the captains of the hundreds, of the bodyguard and the couriers, and brought them to him into the house of Jehovah, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of Jehovah, and shewed them the king's son.
  • He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath — a third of you guarding the royal palace,
  • And he commanded them saying, This is the thing which ye shall do: a third part of you, that come in on the sabbath, shall be keepers of the watch of the king's house;
  • a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding the temple —
  • and a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the couriers; and ye shall keep the watch of the house for a defence.
  • and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king.
  • And the two parts of you, all those that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of Jehovah about the king.
  • Station yourselves around the king, each of you with weapon in hand. Anyone who approaches your ranksb is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
  • And ye shall encompass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and he that comes within the ranks shall be put to death; and ye shall be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.
  • The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men — those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty — and came to Jehoiada the priest.
  • And the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men, those that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go forth on the sabbath, and they came to Jehoiada the priest.
  • Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the Lord.
  • And the priest gave to the captains of the hundreds king David's spears and shields which were in the house of Jehovah.
  • The guards, each with weapon in hand, stationed themselves around the king — near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
  • And the couriers stood by the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, toward the altar and the house.
  • Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!”
  • And he brought forth the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and [gave him] the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, Long live the king!
  • When Athaliah heard the noise made by the guards and the people, she went to the people at the temple of the Lord.
  • The Death of Athaliah

And Athaliah heard the noise of the couriers [and] of the people; and she came to the people into the house of Jehovah.
  • She looked and there was the king, standing by the pillar, as the custom was. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her robes and called out, “Treason! Treason!”
  • And she looked, and behold, the king stood on the dais, according to the custom, and the princes and the trumpeters were by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets. And Athaliah rent her garments and cried, Conspiracy! Conspiracy!
  • Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops: “Bring her out between the ranksc and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the temple of the Lord.”
  • And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds that were set over the host, and said to them, Lead her forth without the ranks; and whosoever follows her, slay with the sword; for the priest said, Let her not be put to death in the house of Jehovah.
  • So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.
  • And they made way for her, and she went by the way by which the horses entered the king's house, and there was she put to death.
  • Jehoiada then made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
  • Jehoiada Restores the Worship of God

And Jehoiada made a covenant between Jehovah and the king and the people, that they should be the people of Jehovah; and between the king and the people.
  • All the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.
Then Jehoiada the priest posted guards at the temple of the Lord.
  • Then all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and broke it down: his altars and his images they broke in pieces completely, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Jehovah.
  • He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards and all the people of the land, and together they brought the king down from the temple of the Lord and went into the palace, entering by way of the gate of the guards. The king then took his place on the royal throne.
  • And he took the captains of the hundreds, and the bodyguard, and the couriers, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of Jehovah, and came by the way through the gate of the couriers into the king's house. And he sat upon the throne of the kings.
  • All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the palace.
  • And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; and they had slain Athaliah with the sword [beside] the king's house.
  • Joashd was seven years old when he began to reign.e
  • Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.
