А Наама́н, нача́льник війська сирійського царя, був муж великий перед своїм паном, вельмиповажа́ний, бо через нього Господь дав перемогу Сирії. І був це муж дуже хоробрий, але прокаже́ний.
Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife.
А сирійці вийшли були́ о́рдами, і взяли́ до неволі з Ізраїлевого кра́ю малу́ дівчину, і вона услуго́вувала жінці Наамана.
She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”
І сказала вона до своєї пані: „Ох, коли б пан мій побував у того пророка, що в Самарії, то він вилікував би його від прока́зи його!“
Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said.
А Нааман прийшов, і доніс своєму панові, говорячи: „Отак і отак говорила та ді́вчина, що з Ізраїлевого кра́ю“.
І сказав сирійський цар: „Тож піди, а я пошлю́ свого листа до Ізраїлевого царя“. І той пішов, і взяв із собою десять талантів срібла та шість тисяч шеклів золота, і десять змін оде́жі.
The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
І він приніс до Ізраїлевого царя такого листа: „Ось тепер, як при́йде оцей лист до тебе, то знай: ото послав я до тебе свого раба Наамана, а ти ви́лікуєш його від прока́зи його.“
As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, “Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me!”
І сталося, як Ізраїлів цар перечита́в цього листа, то роздер свої ша́ти й сказав: „Чи я Бог, щоб убивати чи лишати при житті, що той посилає до мене, щоб я ви́лікував чоловіка від прока́зи його? Тож зна́йте й дивіться — це він шукає проти мене за́чіпки“.
When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
І сталося, як почув Єлисей, Божий чоловік, що Ізраїлів цар роздер шати свої, то послав до царя, говорячи: „Нащо розде́р ти шати свої? Нехай той при́йде до мене, і пізнає, що є пророк ув Ізраїлі!“
So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house.
І прибув Нааман зо своїми кі́ньми та з колесни́цею своєю, і став при вході Єлисеєвого дому.
Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
І послав Єлисей до нього посла, говорячи: „Іди, і ви́миєшся сім раз у Йорда́ні, і вигоїться тіло твоє тобі, — й очи́стишся“.
But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.
І розгнівася Нааман, і пішов і сказав: „Ось я подумав був: він ви́йде до мене, і стане, і закличе Ім'я́ Господа, Бога свого, і покладе́ свою́ руку на те місце, і вилікує прокаже́ного...
Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.
Чи ж не ліпші Авана та Парпар, дама́ські річки́, від усіх Ізраїлевих вод? Чи не міг я ви́митися в них, і стати чистим?“ І повернувся він, і пішов у гніві.
Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!”
І підійшли його раби, і говорили до нього, і сказали: „Батьку мій, коли б велику річ говорив тобі той пророк, чи ж ти не зробив би? А що ж, коли він сказав тобі тільки: Умийся — і будеш чистий!“
So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.
І зійшов він, і зану́рився в Йорда́ні сім раз, за словом Божого чоловіка. І сталося тіло його, як тіло мало́го хлопця, — і став він чистий!...
Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
І верну́вся до Божого чоловіка він та ввесь та́бір його. І прийшов він, і став перед ним та й сказав: „Оце пізнав я, що на всій землі нема Бога, а тільки в Ізраїлі! А тепер візьми́ дару́нка від свого раба“.
The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.
Та Єлисей відказав: „Як живий Господь, що стою́ перед лицем Його, — я не візьму́!“ А той сильно просив його взяти, та він відмо́вився.
“If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord.
І сказав Наама́н: „А як ні, то нехай буде да́но твоєму рабові землі, скільки понесу́ть два мули, бо твій раб не буде вже прино́сити цілопа́лення та жертву іншим богам, а тільки Господе́ві!
But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I have to bow there also — when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”
Тільки оцю річ нехай про́стить Господь твоєму рабові: коли мій пан при́йде до Ріммонового дому, щоб там поклоня́тися, і опира́тиметься на мою руку, то й я схилю́ся в Ріммоновім домі. Коли я кла́нятимуся в Ріммоновім домі, то нехай про́стить Госпо́дь твоєму рабові цю річ!“
“Go in peace,” Elisha said.

А той відказав: „Іди з миром!“ І відійшов від нього на невелику ві́дстань.
Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
І сказав Ґеха́зі, слуга Єлисея, чоловіка Божого: „Ось мій пан стримав цього сирі́янина Наамана, щоб нічого не взяти з руки його, що він приніс. „Як живий Господь, — побіжу́ за ним і візьму́ щось від нього!“
So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.
І погнався Ґеха́зі за Наама́ном. І побачив Нааман бігуна за собою, і зіскочив із воза навпроти нього й сказав: „Чи все гаразд?“
А той відказав: „Гаразд! Пан мій послав мене, говорячи: Ось тепер прийшли до мене з Єфремових гір двоє юнакі́в, пророчі сини. Дай їм талант срібла та дві зміні одежі!“
“By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi.
А Нааман відказав: „Будь ласкав, — візьми два тала́нти!“ І він упро́шував його. І зав'язав він два тала́нти срібла в дві то́рбі, та дві змі́ні одежі, і дав своїм слу́гам, а вони поне́сли перед ним.
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.
І прийшов він до згі́р'я, і взяв з їхньої руки, і вмістив у домі, а тих людей відпустив, і вони пішли.
When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”
“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.
“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.
А він прийшов та й став перед паном своїм. І сказав до нього Єлисей: „Звідки ти, Ґеха́зі?“ А той відказав: „Нікуди не ходи́в твій раб, — ані туди, ані сюди“...
But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money or to accept clothes — or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves?
І сказав Єлисей до нього: „Чи моє серце не ходило з тобою, коли оберну́вся той муж зо свого воза назу́стріч тобі? Чи час бра́ти срібло та бра́ти одежі, і оливки, і виноградинка, і худобу дрібну́ та худобу велику, і рабів, і невільниць?
Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous — it had become as white as snow.
Тож Нааманова прока́за нехай прилі́питься до тебе та до насіння твого навіки!“ І той вийшов від нього прокаже́ний, побілівши, як сніг!
