Further Opposition to the Rebuilding

When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it — though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates —

Когда дошло до слуха Санаваллата и Товии и Гешема Аравитянина и прочих неприятелей наших, что я отстроил стену, и не оставалось в ней повреждений — впрочем, до того времени я ещё не ставил дверей в ворота, —

Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villagesa on the plain of Ono.”
But they were scheming to harm me;

тогда прислал Санаваллат и Гешем ко мне сказать: приди, и сойдёмся в одном из сел на равнине Оно. Они замышляли сделать мне зло.

so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?”

Но я послал к ним послов сказать: я занят большим делом, не могу сойти; дело остановилось бы, если бы я оставил его и сошёл к вам.

Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

Четыре раза присылали они ко мне с таким же приглашением, и я отвечал им то же.

Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter

Тогда прислал ко мне Санаваллат в пятый раз своего слугу, у которого в руке было открытое письмо.

in which was written:
“It is reported among the nations — and Geshemb says it is true — that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king

В нём было написано: слух носится у народов, и Гешем говорит, будто ты и Иудеи задумали отпасть, для чего и строишь стену и хочешь быть у них царём, по тем же слухам;

and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”

и пророков поставил ты, чтоб они разглашали о тебе в Иерусалиме и говорили: «царь Иудейский!» И такие речи дойдут до царя. Итак, приходи, и посоветуемся вместе.

I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”

Но я послал к нему сказать: ничего такого не было, о чём ты говоришь; ты выдумал это своим умом.

They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”
But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”

Ибо все они стращали нас, думая: «опустятся руки их от дела сего, и оно не состоится»; но я тем более укрепил руки мои.

One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you — by night they are coming to kill you.”

Пришёл я в дом Шемаии, сына Делаии, сына Мегетавелова, и он запёрся и сказал: пойдём в дом Божий, внутрь храма, и запрём за собою двери храма, потому что придут убить тебя, и придут убить тебя ночью.

But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!”

Но я сказал: может ли бежать такой человек, как я? Может ли такой, как я, войти в храм, чтобы остаться живым? Не пойду.

I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

12

Я знал, что не Бог послал его, хотя он пророчески говорил мне, но что Товия и Санаваллат подкупили его.

13

He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.

Для того он был подкуплен, чтоб я устрашился и сделал так и согрешил, и чтобы имели о мне худое мнение и преследовали меня за это укоризнами.

Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me.

Помяни, Боже мой, Товию и Санаваллата по сим делам их, а также пророчицу Ноадию и прочих пророков, которые хотели устрашить меня!

So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

Стена была совершена в двадцать пятый день месяца Елула, в пятьдесят два дня.

Opposition to the Completed Wall

When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

Когда услышали об этом все неприятели наши, и увидели это все народы, которые вокруг нас, тогда они очень упали в глазах своих и познали, что это дело сделано Богом нашим.

17

Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.

Сверх того в те дни знатнейшие Иудеи много писали писем, которые посылались к Товии, а Товиины письма приходили к ним.

18

For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.

Ибо многие в Иудее были в клятвенном союзе с ним, потому что он был зять Шехании, сына Арахова, а сын его Иоханан взял за себя дочь Мешуллама, сына Верехии.

Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

Даже о доброте его они говорили при мне, и мои слова переносились к нему. Товия присылал письма, чтоб устрашить меня.
