Further Opposition to the Rebuilding

When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it — though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates —

І сталося, коли Санаваллат, Товія, аравієць Ґисам і решта з наших ворогів почули, що я збудував стіну, то не залишилось у них духу. До того часу в брамах я не встановив воріт.

Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villagesa on the plain of Ono.”
But they were scheming to harm me;

Тож Санаваллат і Ґисам послали до мене, кажучи: Давай зберемося разом в селах на рівнині Оно. А вони замислили вчинити мені зло.

so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?”

Та я відіслав до них послів, кажучи: Я роблю велику справу і не зможу прийти, щоб часом справа не зупинилася. Як тільки її закінчу, то прийду до вас.

Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

А вони присилали до мене подібне до цього слово, і я їм відсилав згідно із цим.

Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter

І тоді Санаваллат послав до мене свого раба і відкритого листа в його руці.

in which was written:
“It is reported among the nations — and Geshemb says it is true — that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king

А в ньому було написано: Між народами поширилася чутка, що ти і юдеї задумуєте збунтуватися, через це ти і будуєш мур, і ти станеш у них царем.

and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”

Тож для цього ти собі поставив пророків, аби ти сів у Єрусалимі за царя в Юди. Тепер же сповістять цареві про ці справи. Тож тепер давай порадимося про це!

I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”

А я послав до нього, кажучи: Не сталося за цими словами, які ти говориш, бо від твого серця ти ними обманюєш!

They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”
But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”

Адже всі нас залякують, кажучи: Ослабнуть їхні руки від цієї справи, і вона не буде зробленою! Тепер же я укріпив свої руки!

One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you — by night they are coming to kill you.”

Одного разу я прийшов у дім Семея, сина Далая, сина Меитавила, а він сидить замкнений. І він сказав: Давай зберемося в Божому домі, у середині нього, і замкнемо його двері, бо вночі мають прийти тебе вбити!

But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!”

А я відповів: Хіба чоловік, такий, як я, втікатиме? Або, хто такий чоловік, який увійде в дім і житиме?

I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

І я зрозумів, і ось Бог його не послав, бо це пророцтво — слово проти мене. Товія і Санаваллат найняли

13

He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.

проти мене юрбу, щоб я злякався, учинив так і згрішив, щоб став я для них поганим іменем, аби вони докорили мене.

14

Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me.

Згадай, Боже, Товії і Санаваллатові згідно із цими його ділами, пророкові Ноадії та решті з пророків, які мене лякали!

So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

На двадцять п’ятий день місяця Елула — через п’ятдесят два дні, мур завершили.

Opposition to the Completed Wall

When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

І сталося, коли всі наші вороги почули, то злякалися всі народи, які довкола нас, і напав сильний страх у їхніх очах, і пізнали, що від нашого Бога цю справу доведено до завершення.

17

Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.

І в ті дні від багатьох знатних з Юди пішли листи до Товії, і від Товії прийшли до них,

For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.

бо багато хто в племені Юди були під клятвою йому, адже він був зятем Сехенії, сина Ірая, а його син Йонатан взяв дочку Месулама, сина Варахія, за жінку.

Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

Тож вони промовляли до мене його слова, і мої слова доносили йому, а Товія надсилав листи, щоб мене налякати.
