І сталося за днів Ахашверо́ша, це той Ахашверо́ш, що царював від Індії аж до Етіопії, сто й двадцять і сім окру́г, —
At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa,
за тих днів, коли цар Ахашверош засів на троні свого царства, на замку Су́зи.
and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials. The military leaders of Persia and Media, the princes, and the nobles of the provinces were present.
Третього року свого царюва́ння справив він гости́ну для всіх своїх князі́в та для своїх слуг ві́йська перського та мідійського, старши́х та прави́телів округ,
For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty.
показуючи ба́гатство слави царства свого й пишну славу своєї вели́чности довгі дні, сто й вісімдесят день.
When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days, in the enclosed garden of the king’s palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest who were in the citadel of Susa.
А по скінченні цих днів справив цар для всього наро́ду, що знахо́дився в за́мку Су́зи, від великого й аж до мало́го, гости́ну на сім день на садко́вому подві́р'ї царсько́го пала́цу.
The garden had hangings of white and blue linen, fastened with cords of white linen and purple material to silver rings on marble pillars. There were couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and other costly stones.
Біла, зелена та блаки́тна ткани́на, три́мана віссо́новими та пурпу́ровими шну́рами, ви́сіла на срібних стовпця́х та мармуро́вих коло́нах. Золоті та срібні ло́жа стояли на підлозі з пли́ток з зеленого, білого, жовтого й чорного ма́рмуру.
Wine was served in goblets of gold, each one different from the other, and the royal wine was abundant, in keeping with the king’s liberality.
А напо́ї подавали в золотому по́суді, в посуді все різному, і царсько́го вина було ве́льми щедро, за великою спромо́жністю царя.
By the king’s command each guest was allowed to drink with no restrictions, for the king instructed all the wine stewards to serve each man what he wished.
А пиття було за встановленим порядком, — ніхто не приму́шував, бо цар так установи́в усім значни́м свого дому, щоб чинили за вподо́бою кожного.
Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in the royal palace of King Xerxes.
Також цариця Ва́шті спра́вила гости́ну для жіно́к в царсько́му домі царя Ахашверо́ша.
On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him — Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Karkas —
Сьо́мого дня, коли цареві стало ве́село на серці від вина, він сказав Мегуманові, Біззеті, Харвоні, Біґті, і Аваґті, Зетарові та Каркасові, сімо́м е́внухам, які служили перед обличчям царя Ахашвероша,
to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at.
приве́сти царицю Вашті перед цареве обличчя в короні царські́й, щоб показати наро́дам та зверхникам її красу́, бо була вона вродли́вого ви́гляду.
But when the attendants delivered the king’s command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger.
Та цариця Ва́шті відмо́вилася прийти за царськи́м словом, що було передане їй через е́внухів. І сильно загні́вався цар, і в ньому горіла його лю́тість!
Since it was customary for the king to consult experts in matters of law and justice, he spoke with the wise men who understood the times
І сказав цар до мудреців, що знають часи́ (бо так царська́ справа йшла перед усіма́, що знали зако́на та право,
and were closest to the king — Karshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memukan, the seven nobles of Persia and Media who had special access to the king and were highest in the kingdom.
а близьки́ми до нього були: Каршена, Шетар, Адмата, Паршіш, Мерес, Марсена, Мемухан, сім князів перськи́х та мідійських, які бачать царе́ве обличчя й сидять перші в царстві):
“According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?” he asked. “She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her.”
„Як велить зако́н, щоб зробити з царицею Вашті за те, що не виконала сло́ва царя Ахашвероша, переданого їй через євнухів?“
Then Memukan replied in the presence of the king and the nobles, “Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the peoples of all the provinces of King Xerxes.
І сказав Мемухан перед царем та князя́ми: „Не перед сами́м царе́м провини́лася цариця Вашті, але й перед усіма́ князя́ми та перед усіма́ народами, що по всіх окру́гах царя Ахашвероша.
For the queen’s conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, ‘King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.’
Бо цари́цин учи́нок ді́йде до всіх жіно́к, і спричи́ниться до пого́рдження їхніх чолові́ків в їхніх оча́х, бо бу́дуть говорити: Цар Ахашверо́ш сказав був приве́сти царицю перед обличчя своє, та вона не прийшла́!
This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the queen’s conduct will respond to all the king’s nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord.
І цього дня казатимуть те саме княгині перські та мідійські, що почують про цари́цин учи́нок, до всіх царськи́х князі́в, — і бу́де багато пого́рди та гніву!
“Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she.
Якщо цареві це добре, нехай ви́йде царськи́й нака́з від нього й нехай буде записане в зако́нах Персії та Мідії, і нехай не поминеться, щоб Вашті більш не прихо́дила перед обличчя царя Ахашвероша, а її царюва́ння цар дасть іншій, ліпшій від неї.
Then when the king’s edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest.”
А коли почується царськи́й нака́з, який цар зробить відо́мим у всім своїм царстві, хоч яке велике воно, то всі жінки́ віддадуть честь своїм чоловікам, від великого й аж до мало́го“.
The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memukan proposed.
І була приємна ця рада в оча́х царя та князі́в, і цар зробив за Мемухановим словом.
He sent dispatches to all parts of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each people in their own language, proclaiming that every man should be ruler over his own household, using his native tongue.
І порозсила́в він листи до всіх царськи́х окру́г, до кожної округи — письмо́м її, і до кожного наро́ду — мовою його́, щоб кожен чоловік був па́ном у домі своєму, і говорив про це мовою свого наро́ду.
