Job’s Final Word to His Friends

And Job continued his discourse:

1

І повів Іов далі свою мову, кажучи:

“As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice,
the Almighty, who has made my life bitter,

«Клянуся Богом, що позбавив мене права,
і Всесильним, що напоїв гіркотою душу мою!

3

as long as I have life within me,
the breath of God in my nostrils,

3

Покіль мій дух у мені,
і Божий подих у моїх ніздрях,

4

my lips will not say anything wicked,
and my tongue will not utter lies.

4

мої уста не говоритимуть неправди, брехні язик мій не промовить.

5

I will never admit you are in the right;
till I die, I will not deny my integrity.

5

Не бувати тому, щоб я та визнав за вами слушність!
Покіль не вмру, я досконалости моєї не зречуся.

6

I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it;
my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.

Триматимусь моєї правди, я її не облишу.
Совість моя ні одним моїм днем мені не докоряє!

“May my enemy be like the wicked,
my adversary like the unjust!

Нехай з моїм ворогом буде як з безбожником,
а з тим, хто встає проти мене — як з беззаконником!

For what hope have the godless when they are cut off,
when God takes away their life?

Яку безбожний має надію, коли молиться,
коли підносить душу свою до Бога?

9

Does God listen to their cry
when distress comes upon them?

9

Чи ж вислухає Бог його взивання,
коли прийде на нього нужда?

10

Will they find delight in the Almighty?
Will they call on God at all times?

10

Чи буде відрадою йому Всесильний?
Чи буде прикликати Бога повсякчасно?

“I will teach you about the power of God;
the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.

Я пояснюю вам поведінку Божу,
я не таю Всесильного задумів.

You have all seen this yourselves.
Why then this meaningless talk?

А якщо усі ви те бачили самі,
то чого марнотою пустословите?

13

“Here is the fate God allots to the wicked,
the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:

13

Ось яка злій людині від Бога доля,
й участь, що від Всесильного насильникові випадає!

14

However many his children, their fate is the sword;
his offspring will never have enough to eat.

14

Як матиме синів багато, під меч підуть;
і його потомки не будуть мати досита хліба.

15

The plague will bury those who survive him,
and their widows will not weep for them.

15

Тих, що зостануться по ньому, мор забере до гробу,
їхні вдови плакати по них не будуть.

16

Though he heaps up silver like dust
and clothes like piles of clay,

16

Хоч він і назбирає, немов пилу, срібла,
й одежі, мов болота, наскладає,

17

what he lays up the righteous will wear,
and the innocent will divide his silver.

17

з наскладаного праведник буде вдягатись,
срібло наслідує невинний.

18

The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon,
like a hut made by a watchman.

18

Він будував дім собі, немов гніздечко;
немов курінь, що робить собі сторож.

19

He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;
when he opens his eyes, all is gone.

Багатим ляже, та востаннє;
відкриває очі: нічого більш немає!

20

Terrors overtake him like a flood;
a tempest snatches him away in the night.

20

Удень прийде страх на нього,
а вночі вхопить його буря.

21

The east wind carries him off, and he is gone;
it sweeps him out of his place.

21

Його підійме східній вітер, і геть піде;
він вихопить його із його місця.

22

It hurls itself against him without mercy
as he flees headlong from its power.

22

На нього непощадно кидатимуть камінням,
від караючої руки він утік би радо.

23

It claps its hands in derision
and hisses him out of his place.”

23

Над ним плескатимуть у долоні;
де б він тільки був, його висвистуватимуть.»
