Then Job replied:

І відповів Йов і сказав:

“Indeed, I know that this is true.
But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?

Правда! я знаю, що так; але як оправдаєсь чоловік перед Богом?

3

Though they wished to dispute with him,
they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.

3

А хоч би схотїв стати з ним на прю, то з тисячі й на одно не з'умів би одказати.

4

His wisdom is profound, his power is vast.
Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?

Він серцем премудрий і великий силою; хто проти його вставав та й бував з'упокоєн?

5

He moves mountains without their knowing it
and overturns them in his anger.

5

Він переносить гори й не пізнають їх; він перевертає їх в гнїву свойму;

6

He shakes the earth from its place
and makes its pillars tremble.

6

Він рушає землю з її місця, і стовпи її колихаються;

7

He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;
he seals off the light of the stars.

7

Скаже сонцеві, — і не зійде, й на звізди печать покладає.

8

He alone stretches out the heavens
and treads on the waves of the sea.

8

Він самий напинає небеса й ходить по валах морських.

9

He is the Maker of the Beara and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

Він і Ведмедя саздав, Орийон і Плеяди, й зорі cкриті на полуднї;

10

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.

10

Творить великі дива, недовідні, безлїчні.

11

When he passes me, I cannot see him;
when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.

11

Ось, він перейде попри мене, й не побачу його; промайне, й не замічу його.

12

If he snatches away, who can stop him?
Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Візьме, та хто заборонить йому? Хто скаже йому: що се ти робиш?

13

God does not restrain his anger;
even the cohorts of Rahab cowered at his feet.

13

Коли Бог не одверне гнїву свого, впадуть перед ним володарі горді;

14

“How then can I dispute with him?
How can I find words to argue with him?

14

Як же менї відказувати йому та прибірати слова проти його?

15

Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;
I could only plead with my Judge for mercy.

15

Хоч би я й прав був, озиватись не буду, а вмоляти му суддю мого.

16

Even if I summoned him and he responded,
I do not believe he would give me a hearing.

16

Як би я покликнув, а він відповів менї, то я не поняв би віри, що мій голос вислухав той,

17

He would crush me with a storm
and multiply my wounds for no reason.

17

Що в хуртовинї мене поражає, й без вини мої рани намножує,

18

He would not let me catch my breath
but would overwhelm me with misery.

18

Та не дає менї спокійно й відотхнути, а без міри годує мене горем.

19

If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!
And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge himb?

Коли питати про силу, то він один могучий; коли же про суд, та хто зведе мене з ним?

20

Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.

20

Буду я оправдуватись, то самі мої уста обвинуватять мене; як я безвинний, то він вину в менї знайде.

21

“Although I am blameless,
I have no concern for myself;
I despise my own life.

21

Так! я не винен; байдуже менї жити; нїзащо менї життє.

22

It is all the same; that is why I say,
‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

Все одно; тим то й сказав я, що він (як схоче) губить безвинного й беззаконного.

23

When a scourge brings sudden death,
he mocks the despair of the innocent.

23

Як того вбиває одразу бичем, то з муки невинних сміється.

24

When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,
he blindfolds its judges.
If it is not he, then who is it?

24

Земля оддана в руки безбожникам; він слїпить очі суддям її. А коли не він, то хто ж инший?

25

“My days are swifter than a runner;
they fly away without a glimpse of joy.

25

Днї мої хутші од гонця, — мчаться, не бачивши долї;

26

They skim past like boats of papyrus,
like eagles swooping down on their prey.

26

Мчаться, мов човни легкі, мов орел, що кидаєсь на здобич.

27

If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,
I will change my expression, and smile,’

27

Як я скажу собі: забуду жалощі мої, виясню мій хмурий вид, підбодрю моє серце,

28

I still dread all my sufferings,
for I know you will not hold me innocent.

28

То знов муки мої лякають мене, знаю бо, що не признаєш мене безвинним;

29

Since I am already found guilty,
why should I struggle in vain?

29

А скоро я винуватий, так чого надармо й силкуватись?

30

Even if I washed myself with soap
and my hands with cleansing powder,

30

Хоч би я й снїгом обмивсь і найчистїйше очистив руки мої,

31

you would plunge me into a slime pit
so that even my clothes would detest me.

31

То й тодї ти трутиш мене в багно, та й одежа моя буде мною гидитись.

32

“He is not a mere mortal like me that I might answer him,
that we might confront each other in court.

32

Він бо не людина, як я, щоб я міг одповідати йому й йти вкупі з ним на суд!

33

If only there were someone to mediate between us,
someone to bring us together,

33

І проміж нас нїякий посередник не стане, щоб положив руку на нас обох.

34

someone to remove God’s rod from me,
so that his terror would frighten me no more.

34

Нехай же відверне він від мене бича свого, й страх його нехай не лякає мене, —

35

Then I would speak up without fear of him,
but as it now stands with me, I cannot.

35

А тодї я говорити му й не збоюсь його, бо я сам собою не такий.
