Then Job replied:

Підхопивши, Йов сказав:

“Indeed, I know that this is true.
But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?

По правді знаю, що так є. Бо як смертна людина буде праведною перед Господом?

3

Though they wished to dispute with him,
they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.

Адже якщо бажає судити Його, Він його не слухатиме, щоб не відказав на одне його слово з тисячі.

4

His wisdom is profound, his power is vast.
Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?

Бо Він є мудрий розумом, сильний і великий. Хто, твердо ставши перед Ним, залишився?

5

He moves mountains without their knowing it
and overturns them in his anger.

5

Він старими робить гори, і вони не знають, Він перекидає їх гнівом.

6

He shakes the earth from its place
and makes its pillars tremble.

6

Він трясе піднебесною від основ, її стовпи хитаються.

7

He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;
he seals off the light of the stars.

7

Він говорить сонцеві, — і не сходить, а зорі запечатує.

8

He alone stretches out the heavens
and treads on the waves of the sea.

Він Сам розтягнув небо і ходить по морю, як по землі, —

He is the Maker of the Beara and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

Він, Хто творить Плеяду, Есперу, Арктура і кімнати півдня,

10

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.

10

Він, Хто чинить велике і незбагненне, славне і надзвичайне, якому немає рахунку.

11

When he passes me, I cannot see him;
when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.

Якщо Він пройде повз мене, то я не побачу. І якщо мине мене, я зовсім не пізнав.

If he snatches away, who can stop him?
Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Якщо Він змінить, хто відверне? Чи хто Йому скаже: Що Ти вчинив?

13

God does not restrain his anger;
even the cohorts of Rahab cowered at his feet.

Адже Він відвернув гнів, зігнулися під Ним кити, що під небом.

14

“How then can I dispute with him?
How can I find words to argue with him?

14

Чи ж мене вислухає, чи розсудить мої слова?

15

Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;
I could only plead with my Judge for mercy.

15

Бо хоч я є праведний, не вислухає мене, благатиму Його суду.

16

Even if I summoned him and he responded,
I do not believe he would give me a hearing.

16

Якщо ж закличу, і почує, то не повірю, що Він мене вислухав.

17

He would crush me with a storm
and multiply my wounds for no reason.

17

Хіба Він не знищить мене темрявою? Численні ж мені зродив ураження без причини.

18

He would not let me catch my breath
but would overwhelm me with misery.

18

Адже не дає мені передихнути, наповнив мене гіркотою.

19

If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!
And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge himb?

Бо ж Він силою міцний. Тож хто чинитиме опір Його судові?

20

Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.

20

Адже якщо я буду праведний, то мої уста будуть безбожні. І якщо буду непорочним, то виявлюсь викривленим.

21

“Although I am blameless,
I have no concern for myself;
I despise my own life.

21

Бо якщо я зробив безбожне, не взнав я душею, але забирається моє життя.

22

It is all the same; that is why I say,
‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

22

Тому я сказав: Великого і сильного нищить гнів,

23

When a scourge brings sudden death,
he mocks the despair of the innocent.

23

бо нікчемні смертю безбожною помирають, але праведних висміюють.

24

When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,
he blindfolds its judges.
If it is not he, then who is it?

24

Адже вони передані в руки безбожних. Обличчя судів її покриває. Якщо ж не Сам Він, хто це?

25

“My days are swifter than a runner;
they fly away without a glimpse of joy.

25

Життя ж моє легше за бігуна. Відбігли і не побачили.

26

They skim past like boats of papyrus,
like eagles swooping down on their prey.

26

І чи є слід дороги корабля, чи орла, що ширяє, який шукає їжу?

27

If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,
I will change my expression, and smile,’

27

Бо якщо скажу, забуду говорити, схилившись обличчям, стогнатиму.

28

I still dread all my sufferings,
for I know you will not hold me innocent.

28

Тремчу всіма членами тіла, бо знаю що не залишиш мене невинним.

29

Since I am already found guilty,
why should I struggle in vain?

29

Якщо ж я є безбожним, то чому я не помер?

30

Even if I washed myself with soap
and my hands with cleansing powder,

30

Бо хоч би я помився снігом і очистився чистими руками,

31

you would plunge me into a slime pit
so that even my clothes would detest me.

31

вдосталь Ти мене занурив у нечистоту, і одяг відчув огиду до мене.

32

“He is not a mere mortal like me that I might answer him,
that we might confront each other in court.

32

Адже Ти не є людиною, як я, Якому протистоятиму, щоб ми разом прийшли на суд.

33

If only there were someone to mediate between us,
someone to bring us together,

33

О, якби в нас був посередник, обвинувач і той, хто вислухає між обома!

34

someone to remove God’s rod from me,
so that his terror would frighten me no more.

34

Нехай Він забере від мене палицю, і Його страх хай мене не тривожить,

35

Then I would speak up without fear of him,
but as it now stands with me, I cannot.

35

і я не боятимусь, але промовлятиму, бо я того не свідомий.
