  • BOOK V
    Psalms 107–150

    Psalm 107

    Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.
  • BOOK 5

    The LORD Delivers Men from Manifold Troubles.

    Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
  • Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story —
    those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
  • Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
    Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
  • those he gathered from the lands,
    from east and west, from north and south.a
  • And gathered from the lands,
    From the east and from the west,
    From the north and from the south.
  • Some wandered in desert wastelands,
    finding no way to a city where they could settle.
  • They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region;
    They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
  • They were hungry and thirsty,
    and their lives ebbed away.
  • They were hungry and thirsty;
    Their soul fainted within them.
  • Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
  • Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
    He delivered them out of their distresses.
  • He led them by a straight way
    to a city where they could settle.
  • He led them also by a straight way,
    To go to an inhabited city.
  • Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
  • Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
    And for His wonders to the sons of men!
  • for he satisfies the thirsty
    and fills the hungry with good things.
  • For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
    And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
  • Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness,
    prisoners suffering in iron chains,
  • There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    Prisoners in misery and chains,
  • because they rebelled against God’s commands
    and despised the plans of the Most High.
  • Because they had rebelled against the words of God
    And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
  • So he subjected them to bitter labor;
    they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
  • Therefore He humbled their heart with labor;
    They stumbled and there was none to help.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
  • Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
    He saved them out of their distresses.
  • He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,
    and broke away their chains.
  • He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
    And broke their bands apart.
  • Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
  • Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
    And for His wonders to the sons of men!
  • for he breaks down gates of bronze
    and cuts through bars of iron.
  • For He has shattered gates of bronze
    And cut bars of iron asunder.
  • Some became fools through their rebellious ways
    and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
  • Fools, because of their rebellious way,
    And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
  • They loathed all food
    and drew near the gates of death.
  • Their soul abhorred all kinds of food,
    And they drew near to the gates of death.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
  • Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
    He saved them out of their distresses.
  • He sent out his word and healed them;
    he rescued them from the grave.
  • He sent His word and healed them,
    And delivered them from their destructions.
  • Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
  • Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
    And for His wonders to the sons of men!
  • Let them sacrifice thank offerings
    and tell of his works with songs of joy.
  • Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    And tell of His works with joyful singing.
  • Some went out on the sea in ships;
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
  • Those who go down to the sea in ships,
    Who do business on great waters;
  • They saw the works of the Lord,
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
  • They have seen the works of the LORD,
    And His wonders in the deep.
  • For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
    that lifted high the waves.
  • For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind,
    Which lifted up the waves of the sea.
  • They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril their courage melted away.
  • They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
    Their soul melted away in their misery.
  • They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
  • They reeled and staggered like a drunken man,
    And were at their wits’ end.
  • Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.
  • Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
    And He brought them out of their distresses.
  • He stilled the storm to a whisper;
    the waves of the seab were hushed.
  • He caused the storm to be still,
    So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
  • They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them to their desired haven.
  • Then they were glad because they were quiet,
    So He guided them to their desired haven.
  • Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
  • Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
    And for His wonders to the sons of men!
  • Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people
    and praise him in the council of the elders.
  • Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people,
    And praise Him at the seat of the elders.
  • He turned rivers into a desert,
    flowing springs into thirsty ground,
  • He changes rivers into a wilderness
    And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
  • and fruitful land into a salt waste,
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
  • A fruitful land into a salt waste,
    Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
  • He turned the desert into pools of water
    and the parched ground into flowing springs;
  • He changes a wilderness into a pool of water
    And a dry land into springs of water;
  • there he brought the hungry to live,
    and they founded a city where they could settle.
  • And there He makes the hungry to dwell,
    So that they may establish an inhabited city,
  • They sowed fields and planted vineyards
    that yielded a fruitful harvest;
  • And sow fields and plant vineyards,
    And gather a fruitful harvest.
  • he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,
    and he did not let their herds diminish.
  • Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly,
    And He does not let their cattle decrease.
  • Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled
    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
  • When they are diminished and bowed down
    Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
  • he who pours contempt on nobles
    made them wander in a trackless waste.
  • He pours contempt upon princes
    And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
  • But he lifted the needy out of their affliction
    and increased their families like flocks.
  • But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction,
    And makes his families like a flock.
  • The upright see and rejoice,
    but all the wicked shut their mouths.
  • The upright see it and are glad;
    But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
  • Let the one who is wise heed these things
    and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.
  • Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things,
    And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD.
