New Living Translation

  • Psalm 140a

    For the director of music. A psalm of David.

    Rescue me, Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from the violent,
  • For the choir director: A psalm of David.

    O LORD, rescue me from evil people.
    Protect me from those who are violent,
  • who devise evil plans in their hearts
    and stir up war every day.
  • those who plot evil in their hearts
    and stir up trouble all day long.
  • They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s;
    the poison of vipers is on their lips.b
  • Their tongues sting like a snake;
    the venom of a viper drips from their lips.
    Interlude
  • Keep me safe, Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
    protect me from the violent,
    who devise ways to trip my feet.
  • O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked.
    Protect me from those who are violent,
    for they are plotting against me.
  • The arrogant have hidden a snare for me;
    they have spread out the cords of their net
    and have set traps for me along my path.
  • The proud have set a trap to catch me;
    they have stretched out a net;
    they have placed traps all along the way.
    Interlude
  • I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”
    Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy.
  • I said to the LORD, “You are my God!”
    Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy!
  • Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer,
    you shield my head in the day of battle.
  • O Sovereign LORD, the strong one who rescued me,
    you protected me on the day of battle.
  • Do not grant the wicked their desires, Lord;
    do not let their plans succeed.
  • LORD, do not let evil people have their way.
    Do not let their evil schemes succeed,
    or they will become proud.
    Interlude
  • Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
    may the mischief of their lips engulf them.
  • Let my enemies be destroyed
    by the very evil they have planned for me.
  • May burning coals fall on them;
    may they be thrown into the fire,
    into miry pits, never to rise.
  • Let burning coals fall down on their heads.
    Let them be thrown into the fire
    or into watery pits from which they can’t escape.
  • May slanderers not be established in the land;
    may disaster hunt down the violent.
  • Don’t let liars prosper here in our land.
    Cause great disasters to fall on the violent.
  • I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor
    and upholds the cause of the needy.
  • But I know the LORD will help those they persecute;
    he will give justice to the poor.
  • Surely the righteous will praise your name,
    and the upright will live in your presence.
  • Surely righteous people are praising your name;
    the godly will live in your presence.
