  • Psalm 49a

    For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

    Hear this, all you peoples;
    listen, all who live in this world,
  • Hear this, all peoples;
    Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
  • both low and high,
    rich and poor alike:
  • Both low and high,
    Rich and poor together.
  • My mouth will speak words of wisdom;
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.
  • My mouth will speak wisdom,
    And the meditation of my heart will be understanding.
  • I will turn my ear to a proverb;
    with the harp I will expound my riddle:
  • I will incline my ear to a proverb;
    I will express my riddle on the harp.
  • Why should I fear when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me —
  • Why should I fear in days of adversity,
    When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me,
  • those who trust in their wealth
    and boast of their great riches?
  • Even those who trust in their wealth
    And boast in the abundance of their riches?
  • No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them —
  • No man can by any means redeem his brother
    Or give to God a ransom for him —
  • the ransom for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough —
  • For the redemption of his soul is costly,
    And he should cease trying forever —
  • so that they should live on forever
    and not see decay.
  • That he should live on eternally,
    That he should not undergo decay.
  • For all can see that the wise die,
    that the foolish and the senseless also perish,
    leaving their wealth to others.
  • For he sees that even wise men die;
    The stupid and the senseless alike perish
    And leave their wealth to others.
  • Their tombs will remain their housesb forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,
    though they hadc named lands after themselves.
  • Their inner thought is that their houses are forever
    And their dwelling places to all generations;
    They have called their lands after their own names.
  • People, despite their wealth, do not endure;
    they are like the beasts that perish.
  • But man in his pomp will not endure;
    He is like the beasts that perish.
  • This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.d
  • This is the way of those who are foolish,
    And of those after them who approve their words.
    Selah.
    As sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
    Death shall be their shepherd;
    And the upright shall rule over them in the morning,
    And their form shall be for Sheol to consume
    So that they have no habitation.
    But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol,
    For He will receive me.
    Selah.
    Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich,
    When the glory of his house is increased;
    For when he dies he will carry nothing away;
    His glory will not descend after him.
    Though while he lives he congratulates himself —
    And though men praise you when you do well for yourself —
    He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
    They will never see the light.
    Man in his pomp, yet without understanding,
    Is like the beasts that perish.

  • They are like sheep and are destined to die;
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).
    Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
  • As sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
    Death shall be their shepherd;
    And the upright shall rule over them in the morning,
    And their form shall be for Sheol to consume
    So that they have no habitation.
  • But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
    he will surely take me to himself.
  • But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol,
    For He will receive me.
    Selah.
    Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich,
    When the glory of his house is increased;

    He shall go to the generation of his fathers;

    Man in his pomp, yet without understanding,
    Is like the beasts that perish.
  • Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
  • Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich,
    When the glory of his house is increased;
  • for they will take nothing with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.
  • For when he dies he will carry nothing away;
    His glory will not descend after him.
  • Though while they live they count themselves blessed —
    and people praise you when you prosper —
  • Though while he lives he congratulates himself —
    And though men praise you when you do well for yourself —
  • they will join those who have gone before them,
    who will never again see the light of life.
  • He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
    They will never see the light.
  • People who have wealth but lack understanding
    are like the beasts that perish.
  • Man in his pomp, yet without understanding,
    Is like the beasts that perish.
