New Living Translation

  • Psalm 56a

    For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.b When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

    Be merciful to me, my God,
    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;
    all day long they press their attack.
  • For the choir director: A psalma of David, regarding the time the Philistines seized him in Gath. To be sung to the tune “Dove on Distant Oaks.”

    O God, have mercy on me,
    for people are hounding me.
    My foes attack me all day long.
  • My adversaries pursue me all day long;
    in their pride many are attacking me.
  • I am constantly hounded by those who slander me,
    and many are boldly attacking me.
  • When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
  • But when I am afraid,
    I will put my trust in you.
  • In God, whose word I praise —
    in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?
  • I praise God for what he has promised.
    I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?
  • All day long they twist my words;
    all their schemes are for my ruin.
  • They are always twisting what I say;
    they spend their days plotting to harm me.
  • They conspire, they lurk,
    they watch my steps,
    hoping to take my life.
  • They come together to spy on me —
    watching my every step, eager to kill me.
  • Because of their wickedness do notc let them escape;
    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.
  • Don’t let them get away with their wickedness;
    in your anger, O God, bring them down.
  • Record my misery;
    list my tears on your scrolld
    are they not in your record?
  • You keep track of all my sorrows.b
    You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
    You have recorded each one in your book.
  • Then my enemies will turn back
    when I call for help.
    By this I will know that God is for me.
  • My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.
    This I know: God is on my side!
  • In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise —
  • I praise God for what he has promised;
    yes, I praise the LORD for what he has promised.
  • in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can man do to me?
  • I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?
  • I am under vows to you, my God;
    I will present my thank offerings to you.
  • I will fulfill my vows to you, O God,
    and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.
  • For you have delivered me from death
    and my feet from stumbling,
    that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.
  • For you have rescued me from death;
    you have kept my feet from slipping.
    So now I can walk in your presence, O God,
    in your life-giving light.
