  • Psalm 74
    A maskila of Asaph.

    O God, why have you rejected us forever?
    Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
  • O God, why have You rejected us forever?
    Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?
  • Remember the nation you purchased long ago,
    the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed —
    Mount Zion, where you dwelt.
  • Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old,
    Which You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your inheritance;
    And this Mount Zion, where You have dwelt.
  • Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,
    all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
  • Turn Your footsteps toward the perpetual ruins;
    The enemy has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
  • Your foes roared in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards as signs.
  • Your adversaries have roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
    They have set up their own standards for signs.
  • They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.
  • It seems as if one had lifted up
    His axe in a forest of trees.
  • They smashed all the carved paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
  • And now all its carved work
    They smash with hatchet and hammers.
  • They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled the dwelling place of your Name.
  • They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;
    They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
  • They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely!”
    They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.
  • They said in their heart, “Let us completely subdue them.”
    They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
  • We are given no signs from God;
    no prophets are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
  • We do not see our signs;
    There is no longer any prophet,
    Nor is there any among us who knows how long.
  • How long will the enemy mock you, God?
    Will the foe revile your name forever?
  • How long, O God, will the adversary revile,
    And the enemy spurn Your name forever?
  • Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
    Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!
  • Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?
    From within Your bosom, destroy them!
  • But God is my King from long ago;
    he brings salvation on the earth.
  • Yet God is my king from of old,
    Who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth.
  • It was you who split open the sea by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.
  • You divided the sea by Your strength;
    You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.
  • It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.
  • You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
    You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
  • It was you who opened up springs and streams;
    you dried up the ever-flowing rivers.
  • You broke open springs and torrents;
    You dried up ever-flowing streams.
  • The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.
  • Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
    You have prepared the light and the sun.
  • It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.
  • You have established all the boundaries of the earth;
    You have made summer and winter.
  • Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people have reviled your name.
  • Remember this, O LORD, that the enemy has reviled,
    And a foolish people has spurned Your name.
  • Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.
  • Do not deliver the soul of Your turtledove to the wild beast;
    Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
  • Have regard for your covenant,
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.
  • Consider the covenant;
    For the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.
  • Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy praise your name.
  • Let not the oppressed return dishonored;
    Let the afflicted and needy praise Your name.
  • Rise up, O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools mock you all day long.
  • Arise, O God, and plead Your own cause;
    Remember how the foolish man reproaches You all day long.
  • Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries,
    the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.
  • Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries,
    The uproar of those who rise against You which ascends continually.
