  • Psalm 78
    A maskila of Asaph.

    My people, hear my teaching;
    listen to the words of my mouth.
  • Tell the Coming Generation

    A Maskila of Asaph.

    Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
  • I will open my mouth with a parable;
    I will utter hidden things, things from of old —
  • I will open my mouth in a parable;
    I will utter dark sayings from of old,
  • things we have heard and known,
    things our ancestors have told us.
  • things that we have heard and known,
    that our fathers have told us.
  • We will not hide them from their descendants;
    we will tell the next generation
    the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
    his power, and the wonders he has done.
  • We will not hide them from their children,
    but tell to the coming generation
    the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and the wonders that he has done.
  • He decreed statutes for Jacob
    and established the law in Israel,
    which he commanded our ancestors
    to teach their children,
  • He established a testimony in Jacob
    and appointed a law in Israel,
    which he commanded our fathers
    to teach to their children,
  • so the next generation would know them,
    even the children yet to be born,
    and they in turn would tell their children.
  • that the next generation might know them,
    the children yet unborn,
    and arise and tell them to their children,
  • Then they would put their trust in God
    and would not forget his deeds
    but would keep his commands.
  • so that they should set their hope in God
    and not forget the works of God,
    but keep his commandments;
  • They would not be like their ancestors —
    a stubborn and rebellious generation,
    whose hearts were not loyal to God,
    whose spirits were not faithful to him.
  • and that they should not be like their fathers,
    a stubborn and rebellious generation,
    a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
    whose spirit was not faithful to God.
  • The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,
    turned back on the day of battle;
  • The Ephraimites, armed withb the bow,
    turned back on the day of battle.
  • they did not keep God’s covenant
    and refused to live by his law.
  • They did not keep God’s covenant,
    but refused to walk according to his law.
  • They forgot what he had done,
    the wonders he had shown them.
  • They forgot his works
    and the wonders that he had shown them.
  • He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors
    in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
  • In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.
  • He divided the sea and led them through;
    he made the water stand up like a wall.
  • He divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters stand like a heap.
  • He guided them with the cloud by day
    and with light from the fire all night.
  • In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
  • He split the rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
  • He split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
  • he brought streams out of a rocky crag
    and made water flow down like rivers.
  • He made streams come out of the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.
  • But they continued to sin against him,
    rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
  • Yet they sinned still more against him,
    rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
  • They willfully put God to the test
    by demanding the food they craved.
  • They tested God in their heart
    by demanding the food they craved.
  • They spoke against God;
    they said, “Can God really
    spread a table in the wilderness?
  • They spoke against God, saying,
    “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
  • True, he struck the rock,
    and water gushed out,
    streams flowed abundantly,
    but can he also give us bread?
    Can he supply meat for his people?”
  • He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
    Can he also give bread
    or provide meat for his people?”
  • When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
    his fire broke out against Jacob,
    and his wrath rose against Israel,
  • Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
    a fire was kindled against Jacob;
    his anger rose against Israel,
  • for they did not believe in God
    or trust in his deliverance.
  • because they did not believe in God
    and did not trust his saving power.
  • Yet he gave a command to the skies above
    and opened the doors of the heavens;
  • Yet he commanded the skies above
    and opened the doors of heaven,
  • he rained down manna for the people to eat,
    he gave them the grain of heaven.
  • and he rained down on them manna to eat
    and gave them the grain of heaven.
  • Human beings ate the bread of angels;
    he sent them all the food they could eat.
  • Man ate of the bread of the angels;
    he sent them food in abundance.
  • He let loose the east wind from the heavens
    and by his power made the south wind blow.
  • He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
    and by his power he led out the south wind;
  • He rained meat down on them like dust,
    birds like sand on the seashore.
  • he rained meat on them like dust,
    winged birds like the sand of the seas;
  • He made them come down inside their camp,
    all around their tents.
  • he let them fall in the midst of their camp,
    all around their dwellings.
  • They ate till they were gorged —
    he had given them what they craved.
  • And they ate and were well filled,
    for he gave them what they craved.
  • But before they turned from what they craved,
    even while the food was still in their mouths,
  • But before they had satisfied their craving,
    while the food was still in their mouths,
  • God’s anger rose against them;
    he put to death the sturdiest among them,
    cutting down the young men of Israel.
  • the anger of God rose against them,
    and he killed the strongest of them
    and laid low the young men of Israel.
  • In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;
    in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.
  • In spite of all this, they still sinned;
    despite his wonders, they did not believe.
  • So he ended their days in futility
    and their years in terror.
  • So he made their days vanish likec a breath,d

  • Whenever God slew them, they would seek him;
    they eagerly turned to him again.

  • They remembered that God was their Rock,
    that God Most High was their Redeemer.
  • They remembered that God was their rock,
    the Most High God their redeemer.
  • But then they would flatter him with their mouths,
    lying to him with their tongues;

  • their hearts were not loyal to him,
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
  • Their heart was not steadfast toward him;
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
  • Yet he was merciful;
    he forgave their iniquities
    and did not destroy them.
    Time after time he restrained his anger
    and did not stir up his full wrath.
  • Yet he, being compassionate,
    atoned for their iniquity
    and did not destroy them;
    he restrained his anger often
    and did not stir up all his wrath.
  • He remembered that they were but flesh,
    a passing breeze that does not return.
  • He remembered that they were but flesh,
    a wind that passes and comes not again.
  • How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness
    and grieved him in the wasteland!

  • He destroyed their vines with hail
    and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
  • He destroyed their vines with hail
    and their sycamores with frost.
  • He gave over their cattle to the hail,
    their livestock to bolts of lightning.
  • He gave over their cattle to the hail
    and their flocks to thunderbolts.
  • He unleashed against them his hot anger,
    his wrath, indignation and hostility —
    a band of destroying angels.
  • He let loose on them his burning anger,
    wrath, indignation, and distress,
    a company of destroying angels.
  • He prepared a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death
    but gave them over to the plague.
  • He made a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death,
    but gave their lives over to the plague.
  • He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,
    the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.
  • He struck down every firstborn in Egypt,
    the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
  • But he brought his people out like a flock;
    he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
  • Then he led out his people like sheep
    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
  • He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
    but the sea engulfed their enemies.
  • He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid,
    but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
  • And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
    to the hill country his right hand had taken.
  • And he brought them to his holy land,
    to the mountain which his right hand had won.
  • He drove out nations before them
    and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;
    he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
  • He drove out nations before them;
    he apportioned them for a possession
    and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
  • But they put God to the test
    and rebelled against the Most High;
    they did not keep his statutes.
  • Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God
    and did not keep his testimonies,
  • Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless,
    as unreliable as a faulty bow.
  • but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;
    they twisted like a deceitful bow.
  • They angered him with their high places;
    they aroused his jealousy with their idols.

    and took him from the sheep pens;

    of Israel his inheritance.
  • from following the nursing ewes he brought him
    to shepherd Jacob his people,
    Israel his inheritance.
