  • For the choir director: A psalm of the descendants of Korah. A song to be sung to the tune “The Suffering of Affliction.” A psalma of Heman the Ezrahite.

    O LORD, God of my salvation,
    I cry out to you by day.
    I come to you at night.
  • May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.
  • Now hear my prayer;
    listen to my cry.
  • I am overwhelmed with troubles
    and my life draws near to death.
  • For my life is full of troubles,
    and deathb draws near.
  • I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am like one without strength.
  • I am as good as dead,
    like a strong man with no strength left.
  • I am set apart with the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
    whom you remember no more,
    who are cut off from your care.
  • They have left me among the dead,
    and I lie like a corpse in a grave.
    I am forgotten,
    cut off from your care.
  • You have put me in the lowest pit,
    in the darkest depths.
  • You have thrown me into the lowest pit,
    into the darkest depths.
  • Your wrath lies heavily on me;
    you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.d
  • Your anger weighs me down;
    with wave after wave you have engulfed me.
    Interlude
  • You have taken from me my closest friends
    and have made me repulsive to them.
    I am confined and cannot escape;
  • You have driven my friends away
    by making me repulsive to them.
    I am in a trap with no way of escape.
  • my eyes are dim with grief.
    I call to you, Lord, every day;
    I spread out my hands to you.
  • My eyes are blinded by my tears.
    Each day I beg for your help, O LORD;
    I lift my hands to you for mercy.
  • Do you show your wonders to the dead?
    Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
  • Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead?
    Do the dead rise up and praise you?
    Interlude
  • Is your love declared in the grave,
    your faithfulness in Destructione?
  • Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love?
    Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?c
  • Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
  • Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds?
    Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
  • But I cry to you for help, Lord;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
  • O LORD, I cry out to you.
    I will keep on pleading day by day.
  • Why, Lord, do you reject me
    and hide your face from me?
  • O LORD, why do you reject me?
    Why do you turn your face from me?
  • From my youth I have suffered and been close to death;
    I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
  • I have been sick and close to death since my youth.
    I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
  • Your wrath has swept over me;
    your terrors have destroyed me.
  • Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me.
    Your terrors have paralyzed me.
  • All day long they surround me like a flood;
    they have completely engulfed me.
  • They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long.
    They have engulfed me completely.
  • You have taken from me friend and neighbor —
    darkness is my closest friend.
  • You have taken away my companions and loved ones.
    Darkness is my closest friend.
