    The proverbs of Solomon:
    A wise son brings joy to his father,
    but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
  • Solomon's Proverbs: The Wise Son

    The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
  • Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value,
    but righteousness delivers from death.
  • Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivereth from death.
  • The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
    but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
  • Jehovah suffereth not the soul of the righteous [man] to famish; but he repelleth the craving of the wicked.
  • Lazy hands make for poverty,
    but diligent hands bring wealth.
  • He cometh to want that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
  • He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son,
    but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
  • He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
  • Blessings crown the head of the righteous,
    but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.a
  • Blessings are upon the head of a righteous [man]; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
  • The name of the righteous is used in blessings,b
    but the name of the wicked will rot.
  • The memory of the righteous [man] shall be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
  • The wise in heart accept commands,
    but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
  • The wise in heart receiveth commandments; but a prating fool shall fall.
  • Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
    but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
  • He that walketh in integrity walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
  • Whoever winks maliciously causes grief,
    and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
  • He that winketh with the eye causeth grief, and a prating fool shall fall.
  • The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
    but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
  • The mouth of a righteous [man] is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
  • Hatred stirs up conflict,
    but love covers over all wrongs.
  • Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions.
  • Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,
    but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.
  • In the lips of an intelligent [man] wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
  • The wise store up knowledge,
    but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
  • The wise lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the fool is near destruction.
  • The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,
    but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
  • The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
  • The wages of the righteous is life,
    but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.
  • The labour of a righteous [man] [tendeth] to life; the revenue of a wicked [man], to sin.
  • Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life,
    but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
  • Keeping instruction is the path to life; but he that forsaketh reproof goeth astray.
  • Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips
    and spreads slander is a fool.
  • He that covereth hatred hath lying lips, and he that sendeth forth a slander is a fool.
  • Sin is not ended by multiplying words,
    but the prudent hold their tongues.
  • In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that restraineth his lips doeth wisely.
  • The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
    but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
  • The tongue of the righteous [man] is [as] choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth.
  • The lips of the righteous nourish many,
    but fools die for lack of sense.
  • The lips of a righteous [man] feed many; but fools die for want of understanding.
  • The blessing of the Lord brings wealth,
    without painful toil for it.
  • The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow to it.
  • A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes,
    but a person of understanding delights in wisdom.
  • It is as sport to a foolish [man] to do wickedness; but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
  • What the wicked dread will overtake them;
    what the righteous desire will be granted.
  • The fear of a wicked [man], it shall come upon him; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
  • When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone,
    but the righteous stand firm forever.
  • As a whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no [more]; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
  • As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
    so are sluggards to those who send them.
  • As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
  • The fear of the Lord adds length to life,
    but the years of the wicked are cut short.
  • The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
  • The prospect of the righteous is joy,
    but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
  • The hope of the righteous is joy; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
  • The way of the Lord is a refuge for the blameless,
    but it is the ruin of those who do evil.
  • The way of Jehovah is strength to the perfect [man], but destruction to the workers of iniquity.
  • The righteous will never be uprooted,
    but the wicked will not remain in the land.
  • The righteous [man] shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land.
  • From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom,
    but a perverse tongue will be silenced.
  • The mouth of a righteous [man] putteth forth wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
  • The lips of the righteous know what finds favor,
    but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
  • The lips of a righteous [man] know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is frowardness.
