New International Version

New American Standard Bible

  • Warnings Against Folly

    My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
    if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
  • Parental Counsel

    My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor,
    Have given a pledge for a stranger,
  • you have been trapped by what you said,
    ensnared by the words of your mouth.
  • If you have been snared with the words of your mouth,
    Have been caught with the words of your mouth,
  • So do this, my son, to free yourself,
    since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
    Go — to the point of exhaustion — a
    and give your neighbor no rest!
  • Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself;
    Since you have come into the hand of your neighbor,
    Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.
  • Allow no sleep to your eyes,
    no slumber to your eyelids.
  • Give no sleep to your eyes,
    Nor slumber to your eyelids;
  • Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
    like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
  • Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter’s hand
    And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
  • Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
  • Go to the ant, O sluggard,
    Observe her ways and be wise,
  • It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
  • Which, having no chief,
    Officer or ruler,
  • yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.
  • Prepares her food in the summer
    And gathers her provision in the harvest.
  • How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
    When will you get up from your sleep?
  • How long will you lie down, O sluggard?
    When will you arise from your sleep?
  • A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest —
  • “A little sleep, a little slumber,
    A little folding of the hands to rest” —
  • and poverty will come on you like a thief
    and scarcity like an armed man.
  • Your poverty will come in like a vagabond
    And your need like an armed man.
  • A troublemaker and a villain,
    who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
  • A worthless person, a wicked man,
    Is the one who walks with a perverse mouth,
  • who winks maliciously with his eye,
    signals with his feet
    and motions with his fingers,
  • Who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet,
    Who points with his fingers;
  • who plots evil with deceit in his heart —
    he always stirs up conflict.
  • Who with perversity in his heart continually devises evil,
    Who spreads strife.
  • Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
    he will suddenly be destroyed — without remedy.
  • Therefore his calamity will come suddenly;
    Instantly he will be broken and there will be no healing.
  • There are six things the Lord hates,
    seven that are detestable to him:
  • There are six things which the LORD hates,
    Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
  • haughty eyes,
    a lying tongue,
    hands that shed innocent blood,
  • Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
    And hands that shed innocent blood,
  • a heart that devises wicked schemes,
    feet that are quick to rush into evil,
  • A heart that devises wicked plans,
    Feet that run rapidly to evil,
  • a false witness who pours out lies
    and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
  • A false witness who utters lies,
    And one who spreads strife among brothers.
  • Warning Against Adultery

    My son, keep your father’s command
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
  • My son, observe the commandment of your father
    And do not forsake the teaching of your mother;
  • Bind them always on your heart;
    fasten them around your neck.
  • Bind them continually on your heart;
    Tie them around your neck.
  • When you walk, they will guide you;
    when you sleep, they will watch over you;
    when you awake, they will speak to you.
  • When you walk about, they will guide you;
    When you sleep, they will watch over you;
    And when you awake, they will talk to you.
  • For this command is a lamp,
    this teaching is a light,
    and correction and instruction
    are the way to life,
  • For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light;
    And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
  • keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,
    from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.
  • To keep you from the evil woman,
    From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
  • Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
    or let her captivate you with her eyes.
  • Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
    Nor let her capture you with her eyelids.
  • For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,
    but another man’s wife preys on your very life.
  • For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread,
    And an adulteress hunts for the precious life.
  • Can a man scoop fire into his lap
    without his clothes being burned?
  • Can a man take fire in his bosom
    And his clothes not be burned?
  • Can a man walk on hot coals
    without his feet being scorched?
  • Or can a man walk on hot coals
    And his feet not be scorched?
  • So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;
    no one who touches her will go unpunished.
  • So is the one who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
    Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.
  • People do not despise a thief if he steals
    to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
  • Men do not despise a thief if he steals
    To satisfy himself when he is hungry;
  • Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,
    though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
  • But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold;
    He must give all the substance of his house.
  • But a man who commits adultery has no sense;
    whoever does so destroys himself.
  • The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense;
    He who would destroy himself does it.
  • Blows and disgrace are his lot,
    and his shame will never be wiped away.
  • Wounds and disgrace he will find,
    And his reproach will not be blotted out.
  • For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury,
    and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
  • For jealousy enrages a man,
    And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
  • He will not accept any compensation;
    he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
  • He will not accept any ransom,
    Nor will he be satisfied though you give many gifts.
