Everything Is Meaningless

The words of the Teacher,a son of David, king in Jerusalem:

Слова Екклезіаста, сина Давида, царя Ізраїля в Єрусалимі.

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”

Марнота марнот, — сказав Екклезіаст, — марнота марнот, усе марнота.

What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?

Яка користь людині в усій її праці, якою трудиться під сонцем?

Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.

Рід приходить, і рід відходить, земля ж стоїть навіки.

The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.

І сонце сходить, і сонце заходить, і тягнеться до свого місця.

The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.

Воно, підіймаючись, іде туди на південь і обходить до півночі. Обходячи, обходить, іде вітер, і у своїх коловоротах вітер повертається.

All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.

Усі потоки течуть до моря, та море не переповниться. На місце, звідки течуть потоки, туди вони повертаються, щоби плисти знову.

All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.

Усі речі стомлюючі. Не зможе людина виказати, і око не насититься баченням, і вухо не насититься слуханням.

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

Усе те, що було, — воно те, що буде. І що те, котре зроблене, — воно те, що буде зроблене. Немає нічого нового під сонцем.

Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.

Хто промовить і скаже: Поглянь, це нове, — воно вже сталося у віках, що були перед нами.

No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.

Немає пам’яті перших, і останнім, що сталися, не буде їм пам’яті в тих, що стануться в кінці.

Wisdom Is Meaningless

I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Я, Екклезіаст, був царем над Ізраїлем у Єрусалимі.

I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!

І я віддав моє серце, аби шукати і дослідити мудрістю все, що відбувається під небом. Адже Бог дав людським синам погані обставини, щоб перебувати в них.

I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Я побачив усі творіння, зроблені під сонцем, і ось усе марнота і бажання духа.

What is crooked cannot be straightened;
what is lacking cannot be counted.

Викривлене не зможе прикраситися, і те, чого бракує, не зможе бути порахованим.

16

I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.”

Я сказав у своєму серці, мовлячи: Ось я звеличився і поставив мудрість над усіма, що були переді мною в Єрусалимі, і моє серце багато побачило мудрості та знання.

Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

Я віддав моє серце, щоб пізнати мудрість і знання, я пізнав притчі та загадки, бо і це — бажання духа.

18

For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;
the more knowledge, the more grief.

Адже в безлічі мудрості — безліч пізнання, і хто побільшує пізнання, побільшує страждання.
