Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness

Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed —
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors —
and they have no comforter.

Я ж повернувся і побачив усі пригноблення, що сталися під сонцем. І ось сльоза пригноблених, і немає в них потішника, і в руках їхніх гнобителів — сила, і немає в них потішника.

And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.

Я похвалив померлих, що вже померли, понад живих, які живуть аж дотепер.

But better than both
is the one who has never been born,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.

І кращим за них обох є той, що ще не був, хто не побачив зла, що зробили з творінням під сонцем.

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

І я побачив увесь труд і всю сміливість творіння, бо воно — ревнощі чоловіка до свого друга. Це — марнота і бажання духа.

Fools fold their hands
and ruin themselves.

Безумний схрестив свої руки і з’їв своє тіло.

Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil
and chasing after the wind.

Краще повні пригорщі спокою, ніж повні дві пригорщі праці та бажання духа.

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

І я повернувся, і побачив марноту під сонцем.

There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless —
a miserable business!

Є один, і немає другого, немає в нього ні сина, ні брата. І немає кінця всьому його трудові, та його око не насичується багатством. Для кого ж я працюю і позбуваю мою душу доброти? І це — марнота та погана плутанина.

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:

Двом краще, ніж одному, для яких є добра винагорода в їхньому труді.

If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.

Бо якщо впадуть, один піднімає свого спільника, і горе йому одному, коли впаде, і не буде другого, щоби його підняти.

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

І якщо заснуть два, то їм тепло. Як же один зігріється?

Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

І якщо скріпиться один, два стануть проти нього, і шнур, втроє сплетений, розірветься не скоро.

Advancement Is Meaningless

Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning.

Бідний і мудрий раб кращий за старого і безумного царя, який ще не навчився, як сприймати.

The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom.

Бо вийдуть з дому кайданів, щоб царювати, бо і в його царстві бідним народився.

15

I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor.

Я побачив усіх, що живуть, котрі ходять під сонцем, з другим молодцем, що встане замість нього,

There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

немає кінця всякому народові, усім, які перед ними були. І останні ним не розвеселяться, бо і це — марнота і бажання духа.
