I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind:
Є ще зло, що я бачив під сонцем, і багато його між людьми́:
God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.
Ось люди́на, що Бог їй багатство дає, і маєтки та славу, і недостатку ні в чо́му, чого́ зажадає, не чує вона для своєї душі, але Бог не дав вла́ди їй те спожива́ти, — бо чужа люди́на те поїсть: Це марно́та й неду́га тяжка́!
A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.
Якби сотню дітей наплоди́в чоловік, і прожи́в пречисле́нні літа́, і дні віку його були довгі, але не наси́тилась добрим душа його, а до того не мав би й належного по́хорону, то кажу́: недоно́скові краще від нього!

For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?
Бо хто знає, що́ добре люди́ні в житті, за небагатьох днів марно́го життя її, які пробуває вона, немов тінь? Та й що́ хто розкаже люди́ні, що́ буде під сонцем по ній?
