Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll
In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord:

І сталося четвертого року Єгоякима, Йосіїного сина, царя Юдиного, було оце слово до Єремії від Господа, кажучи:
“Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now.
„Візьми собі книжко́вого зво́я, і напиши на ньому всі ті слова, що Я говорив тобі про Ізраїля й про Юду, та про всі наро́ди від дня, коли Я почав говорити тобі, від днів Йосії та аж до цього дня.
Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, they will each turn from their wicked ways; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin.”
Може почує дім Юдин усе те зло, що Я ду́маю вчинити їм, щоб верну́лися кожен зо своєї злої дороги, а Я прощу́ їхню провину та їхній гріх“.
So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and while Jeremiah dictated all the words the Lord had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them on the scroll.
І покликав Єремія Бару́ха, Нерійїного сина, і Бару́х написав з уст Єремії всі Господні слова́, що Він говорив йому, на книжко́вий звій.
Then Jeremiah told Baruch, “I am restricted; I am not allowed to go to the Lord’s temple.
І наказав Єремія Барухові, кажучи: „Я задержаний, — не мо́жу ввійти до Господнього дому.
So you go to the house of the Lord on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll the words of the Lord that you wrote as I dictated. Read them to all the people of Judah who come in from their towns.
Тому́ піди сам, прочитай зо зво́ю, що написав ти з моїх уст, Господні слова́ в ву́ха народу в Господньому домі в дні по́сту, а також в ву́ха всього Юди, що прихо́дить зо своїх міст, відчитаєш їх.
Perhaps they will bring their petition before the Lord and will each turn from their wicked ways, for the anger and wrath pronounced against this people by the Lord are great.”
Може впаде́ їхнє блага́ння перед Господнє лице́, і вони ве́рнуться кожен зо своєї злої дороги, бо великий гнів та лютість, що Господь говорив проти наро́ду цього!“
Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do; at the Lord’s temple he read the words of the Lord from the scroll.
І зробив Бару́х, син Нерійїн, усе, що наказав був йому пророк Єремія, щоб прочитати з книги Господні слова́ в Господньому домі.
In the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting before the Lord was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah.
І сталося п'ятого року Єгоякима, Йосіїного сина, царя Юдиного, дев'ятого місяця, оголосили піст перед Господнім лицем для всього наро́ду в Єрусалимі та для всьо́го того наро́ду, що поприхо́див з Юдиних міст до Єрусалиму.
From the room of Gemariah son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate of the temple, Baruch read to all the people at the Lord’s temple the words of Jeremiah from the scroll.
І прочитав Барух з книги Єреміїні слова́ в домі Господньому в кімна́ті писаря Ґемарії, Шафанового сина, на горі́шньому подвір'ї, при вході до ново́ї брами Господнього дому, в ву́ха всього наро́ду.
When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the scroll,
І почув Михей, син Ґемарії, Шафанового сина, всі Господні слова́ з книги,
he went down to the secretary’s room in the royal palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Akbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
і зійшов до царсько́го дому, до кімна́ти писаря, аж ось там сидять усі зверхники: писар Елішама, і Делая, син Шемаїн, і Елнатан, син Ахборів, і Ґемарія, син Шафанів, і Седекі́я, син Хананії, і всі зверхники.
After Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read to the people from the scroll,
І розповів їм Михей всі ті слова́, які він почув був, коли Барух читав із книги в ву́ха наро́ду.
all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Bring the scroll from which you have read to the people and come.” So Baruch son of Neriah went to them with the scroll in his hand.
І всі зверхники послали до Баруха Єгудія, сина Нетанії, сина Шелемії, сина Кушіїного, говорячи: „Того зво́я, що читав ти з нього в ву́ха народу, візьми́ його в свою руку та й прийди́!“ І взяв Барух, син Нерійїн, звоя в свою руку та й прийшов до них.
They said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.”
So Baruch read it to them.
So Baruch read it to them.
А ті сказали до нього: „Сідай же, і прочитай його в наші ву́ха!“ І прочитав Барух в їхні ву́ха.
When they heard all these words, they looked at each other in fear and said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.”
І сталося, коли вони почули всі ці слова, жахну́лися один перед о́дним, та й сказали Барухові: „Конче перекажімо царе́ві всі ці слова́!“
Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, how did you come to write all this? Did Jeremiah dictate it?”
І запитали вони Баруха, говорячи: „Розкажи нам, як ти писав усі ці слова́ з його уст?“
“Yes,” Baruch replied, “he dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them in ink on the scroll.”
І сказав їм Барух: „Він проказував мені з своїх уст усі ці слова́, а я писав у книзі чорнилом“.
Then the officials said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah, go and hide. Don’t let anyone know where you are.”
І сказали зверхники до Баруха: „Іди, сховайся, ти та Єремія, і нехай ніхто не знає, де́ ви!“
After they put the scroll in the room of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported everything to him.
І прийшли вони до царя на подві́р'я, а зво́я поклали в кімна́ті писаря Елішами, і розповіли́ в ву́ха царя всі ті слова.
The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to the king and all the officials standing beside him.
І послав цар Єгудія взяти зво́я, і той узяв його з кімна́ти писаря Елішами. І Єгудій прочитав його в ву́ха царя та в ву́ха всіх зверхнпків, що стояли при царі.
It was the ninth month and the king was sitting in the winter apartment, with a fire burning in the firepot in front of him.
А цар сидів у зимо́вому домі, дев'ятого місяця, і перед ним був розпа́лений комино́к.
Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire.
І сталося, коли Єгудій перечи́тував три чи чотири стовпці́, то цар відрізував це пи́сарським ноже́м та й ки́дав до огню́, що в коминку́, аж поки не згорів увесь звій на огні, що в коминку́.
The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes.
Та не злякалися й не роздерли своїх шат цар та всі його раби, що слухали всі ці слова́.
Even though Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
І хоч Елнатан, і Делая, і Ґемарія просили царя не палити того зво́ю, та не послухався він їх.
Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord had hidden them.
І наказав цар Єрахмеїлові, синові царе́вому, і Сераї, синові Азріїловому, і Шелемії, синові Авдіїловому, взяти писаря Баруха й пророка Єремію, та Господь їх сховав.
After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:
І було Господнє слово до Єремії пото́му, як цар спалив був зво́я та ті слова́, що Барух написав з Єреміїних уст, говорячи:
“Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up.
„Візьми собі зно́ву іншого зво́я, і напиши на ньому всі перші слова́, що були на першому зво́ї, якого спалив Єгояким, цар Юдин.
Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You burned that scroll and said, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it both man and beast?”
А про Єгоякима, царя Юдиного, скажеш: Так говорить Господь: Ти спалив цього зво́я, говорячи: На́що написав ти на ньому таке: Конче при́йде цар вавилонський і знищить оцей край, і ви́губить в ньому люди́ну й скотину.
Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out and exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night.
Тому́ так говорить Господь про Єгоякима, Юдиного царя: Не буде від нього сидячого на Давидовому троні, а його труп буде ки́нений на спеко́ту вдень та на холод вночі.
I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.’ ”
І навіщу́ його та насіння його, і його рабів за їхні провини, і спрова́джу на них та на ме́шканців Єрусалиму й на юде́янина все те зло, що Я говорив до них, та вони не послухали“.
So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.
І Єремія взяв іншого зво́я, і дав його пи́сареві Барухові, синові Нерійїному, і той написав на ньому з Єреміїних уст усі слова тієї книги, яку спалив був Єгояким, цар Юдин, в огні, і до них було до́дано ще багато подібних слів.
