Darby Bible Translation

  • The Valley of Dry Bones

The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.
  • The Valley of Dry Bones

The hand of Jehovah was upon me, and Jehovah carried me out in the Spirit, and set me down in the midst of a valley; and it was full of bones.
  • He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry.
  • And he caused me to pass by them round about; and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and behold, they were very dry.
  • He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
  • And he said unto me, Son of man, Shall these bones live? And I said, Lord Jehovah, thou knowest.
  • Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!
  • And he said unto me, Prophesy over these bones, and say unto them, Ye dry bones, hear the word of Jehovah.
  • This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breatha enter you, and you will come to life.
  • Thus saith the Lord Jehovah unto these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live.
  • I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”
  • And I will put sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live: and ye shall know that I [am] Jehovah.
  • So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone.
  • And I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a rustling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone.
  • I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
  • And I looked, and behold, sinews and flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them.
  • Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’ ”
  • And he said unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
  • So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet — a vast army.
  • And I prophesied as he had commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
  • Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’
  • The Vision Explained

And he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off!
  • Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
  • Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, O my people, and bring you into the land of Israel.
  • Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.
  • And ye shall know that I [am] Jehovah, when I have opened your graves, and have caused you to come up out of your graves, O my people.
  • I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’ ”
  • And I will put my Spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I will place you in your own land: and ye shall know that I Jehovah have spoken, and have done [it], saith Jehovah.
  • One Nation Under One King

The word of the Lord came to me:
  • One Nation with One King

And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
  • “Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’
  • And thou, son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel, his companions. And take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and all the house of Israel, his companions.
  • Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.
  • And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thy hand.
  • “When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’
  • And when the children of my people speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not declare unto us what thou meanest by these?
  • say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph — which is in Ephraim’s hand — and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’
  • say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his companions, and will put them with this, with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in my hand.
  • Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on
  • And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thy hand before their eyes.
  • and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.
  • And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, whither they are gone, and will gather them from every side, and bring them into their own land:
  • I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.
  • and I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.
  • They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,b and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.
  • And they shall not defile themselves any more with their idols, or with their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions; and I will save them out of all their dwelling-places wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
  • “ ‘My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.
  • And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: and they shall walk in mine ordinances, and keep my statutes, and do them.
  • They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever.
  • And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and David my servant shall be their prince for ever.
  • I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them forever.
  • And I will make a covenant of peace with them: it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for ever.
  • My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.
  • And my tabernacle shall be over them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
  • Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy, when my sanctuary is among them forever.’ ”
  • And the nations shall know that I Jehovah do hallow Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for ever.
