New International Version

New King James Version

  • Witnesses Summoned Against Israel

    Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you — against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:
  • Authority of the Prophet’s Message

    Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:
  • “You only have I chosen
    of all the families of the earth;
    therefore I will punish you
    for all your sins.”
  • “You only have I known of all the families of the earth;
    Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”
  • Do two walk together
    unless they have agreed to do so?
  • Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
  • Does a lion roar in the thicket
    when it has no prey?
    Does it growl in its den
    when it has caught nothing?
  • Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey?
    Will a young lion [a]cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing?
  • Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground
    when no bait is there?
    Does a trap spring up from the ground
    if it has not caught anything?
  • Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no [b]trap for it?
    Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all?
  • When a trumpet sounds in a city,
    do not the people tremble?
    When disaster comes to a city,
    has not the Lord caused it?
  • If a [c]trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid?
    If there is calamity in a city, will not the Lord have done it?
  • Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing
    without revealing his plan
    to his servants the prophets.
  • Surely the Lord God does nothing,
    Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
  • The lion has roared —
    who will not fear?
    The Sovereign Lord has spoken —
    who can but prophesy?
  • A lion has roared!
    Who will not fear?
    The Lord God has spoken!
    Who can but prophesy?
  • Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod
    and to the fortresses of Egypt:
    “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria;
    see the great unrest within her
    and the oppression among her people.”
  • Punishment of Israel’s Sins

    “Proclaim in the palaces at [d]Ashdod,
    And in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say:
    ‘Assemble on the mountains of Samaria;
    See great tumults in her midst,
    And the [e]oppressed within her.
  • “They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,
    “who store up in their fortresses
    what they have plundered and looted.”
  • For they do not know to do right,’
    Says the Lord,
    ‘Who store up violence and [f]robbery in their palaces.’ ”
  • Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
    “An enemy will overrun your land,
    pull down your strongholds
    and plunder your fortresses.”
  • Therefore thus says the Lord God:
    “An adversary shall be all around the land;
    He shall sap your strength from you,
    And your palaces shall be plundered.”
  • This is what the Lord says:
    “As a shepherd rescues from the lion’s mouth
    only two leg bones or a piece of an ear,
    so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued,
    with only the head of a bed
    and a piece of fabrica from a couch.b
  • Thus says the Lord:
    “As a shepherd [g]takes from the mouth of a lion
    Two legs or a piece of an ear,
    So shall the children of Israel be taken out
    Who dwell in Samaria —
    In the corner of a bed and [h]on the edge of a couch!
  • “Hear this and testify against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the Lord God Almighty.
  • Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,”
    Says the Lord God, the God of hosts,
  • “On the day I punish Israel for her sins,
    I will destroy the altars of Bethel;
    the horns of the altar will be cut off
    and fall to the ground.
  • “That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions,
    I will also visit destruction on the altars of Bethel;
    And the horns of the altar shall be cut off
    And fall to the ground.
  • I will tear down the winter house
    along with the summer house;
    the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed
    and the mansions will be demolished,”
    declares the Lord.
  • I will [i]destroy the winter house along with the summer house;
    The houses of ivory shall perish,
    And the great houses shall have an end,”
    Says the Lord.
