“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
Устань, піди у велике місто Ніневію та сповісти в ньому за ранішньою проповіддю, яку Я тобі сказав.
Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it.
І Йона встав, і пішов до Ніневії, — як і сказав Господь. А Ніневія була великим містом для Бога, якихось трьох днів ходи дороги.
Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”
І Йона почав підходити до міста, як хода одного дня, і проповідував, кажучи: Ще три дні, і Ніневія буде зруйнована!
The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.
І слово наблизилося до царя Ніневії, і він устав зі свого престолу, зняв із себе свій одяг, одягнувся в мішковину і сів на попелі.
This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles:
Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.

І проповідувалось, і сказано від царя в Ніневії і від його вельмож, кажучи: Люди, худоба, воли і вівці хай нічого не їдять, не пасуться і не п’ють води!
But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.
Люди і худоба вдягнулися в мішковину і ревно заголосили до Бога. І відвернулися кожний від своєї поганої дороги та від неправедності, що в їхніх руках, кажучи:
Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”
Хто знає, чи не розкається Бог? І Він відвернеться від гніву Свого обурення, і не будемо винищені!
