Darby Bible Translation

  • on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:
  • Greater Glory in New Temple

In the seventh [month], on the one and twentieth [day] of the month, came the word of Jehovah by the prophet Haggai, saying,
  • “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak,a the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them,
  • Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
  • ‘Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?
  • Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?
  • But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.
  • But now be strong, Zerubbabel, saith Jehovah; and be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith Jehovah, and work: for I am with you, saith Jehovah of hosts.
  • ‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
  • The word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, and my Spirit, remain among you: fear ye not.
  • “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
  • For thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry [land];
  • I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty.
  • and I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, saith Jehovah of hosts.
  • ‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty.
  • The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith Jehovah of hosts.
  • ‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
  • The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts.
  • Blessings for a Defiled People

On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai:
  • Blessings for a Defiled People

On the four and twentieth [day] of the ninth [month], in the second year of Darius, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,
  • “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says:
  • Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Ask now the priests [concerning] the law, saying,
  • If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?’ ”
    The priests answered, “No.”
  • If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any food -- shall it become holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
  • Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?”
“Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.”
  • And Haggai said, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, is it become unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
  • Then Haggai said, “ ‘So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the Lord. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.
  • Then answered Haggai and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith Jehovah, and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
  • “ ‘Now give careful thought to this from this day onb — consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the Lord’s temple.
  • And now, I pray you, consider from this day and onward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of Jehovah,
  • When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.
  • -- before those [days] were, when one came to a heap of twenty [measures], there were but ten; when one came to the vat to draw out fifty press-measures, there were but twenty.
  • I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,’ declares the Lord.
  • I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands; and ye [turned] not to me, saith Jehovah.
  • ‘From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid. Give careful thought:
  • Consider, I pray you, from this day and onward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth [month], from the day that the foundation of Jehovah's temple was laid, consider [it].
  • Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit.
“ ‘From this day on I will bless you.’ ”
  • Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree have not brought forth: from this day will I bless [you].
  • Zerubbabel the Lord’s Signet Ring

The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
  • Zerubbabel the Lord's Signet Ring

And the word of Jehovah came the second time unto Haggai on the four and twentieth [day] of the month, saying,
  • “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
  • Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;
  • I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
  • and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride therein; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
  • “ ‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
  • In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, will I take thee, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant, saith Jehovah, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith Jehovah of hosts.
