New Living Translation

  • Zelophehad’s Daughters

The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward
  • The Daughters of Zelophehad

One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad — Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph.
  • and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said,
  • These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle.a
  • “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
  • “Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the LORD; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons.
  • Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
  • Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.”
  • So Moses brought their case before the Lord,
  • So Moses brought their case before the LORD.
  • and the Lord said to him,
  • And the LORD replied to Moses,
  • “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.
  • “The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father’s relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father.
  • “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter.
  • “And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his daughters.
  • If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
  • And if he has no daughter either, transfer his inheritance to his brothers.
  • If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
  • If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
  • If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’ ”
  • But if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.”
  • Joshua to Succeed Moses

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites.

  • Joshua Chosen to Lead Israel

One day the LORD said to Moses, “Climb one of the mountains east of the river,b and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel.
  • After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was,
  • After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron,
  • for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)
  • for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters.” (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadeshc in the wilderness of Zin.)
  • Moses said to the Lord,
  • Then Moses said to the LORD,
  • “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community
  • “O LORD, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.
  • to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
  • Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
  • So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,a and lay your hand on him.
  • The LORD replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
  • Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.
  • Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.
  • Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.
  • Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him.
  • He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”
  • When direction from the LORD is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim — one of the sacred lots cast before the LORD — to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”
  • Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly.
  • So Moses did as the LORD commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community.
  • Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.
  • Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
