New King James Version

  • Vengeance on the Midianites

    The Lord said to Moses,
  • Vengeance on the Midianites

    And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
  • “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”
  • So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance on them.
  • So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the Lord on Midian.
  • Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.”
  • A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war.”
  • So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.
  • So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
  • Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
  • Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and the signal trumpets in his hand.
  • They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every man.
  • And they warred against the Midianites, just as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed all the males.
  • Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba — the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
  • They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed — Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.
  • The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.
  • And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods.
  • They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.
  • They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts.
  • They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,
  • And they took all the spoil and all the booty — of man and beast.
  • and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
  • Return from the War

    Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
  • Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.
  • And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp.
  • Moses was angry with the officers of the army — the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds — who returned from the battle.
  • But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle.
  • “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them.
  • And Moses said to them: “Have you kept all the women alive?
  • “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people.
  • Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.
  • Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,
  • Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately.
  • but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
  • But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately.
  • “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives.
  • And as for you, remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day.
  • Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.”
  • Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.”
  • Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses:
  • Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, “This is the [a]ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses:
  • Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead
  • Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
  • and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
  • everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water.
  • On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”
  • And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.”
  • Dividing the Spoils

    The Lord said to Moses,
  • Division of the Plunder

    Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured.
  • “Count up the plunder that was [b]taken — of man and beast — you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation;
  • Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community.
  • and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.
  • From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep.
  • And levy a [c]tribute for the Lord on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep;
  • Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part.
  • take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the Lord.
  • From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.”
  • And from the children of Israel’s half you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who [d]keep charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.”
  • So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep,
  • The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,
  • 72,000 cattle,
  • seventy-two thousand cattle,
  • 61,000 donkeys
  • sixty-one thousand donkeys,
  • and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.
  • and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately.
  • The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
    337,500 sheep,
  • And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;
  • of which the tribute for the Lord was 675;
  • and the Lord’s [e]tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.
  • 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;
  • The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord’s tribute was seventy-two.
  • 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;
  • The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the Lord’s tribute was sixty-one.
  • 16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.
  • The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the Lord’s tribute was thirty-two persons.
  • Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part, as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • So Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord’s heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men —
  • And from the children of Israel’s half, which Moses separated from the men who fought —
  • the community’s half — was 337,500 sheep,
  • now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
  • 36,000 cattle,
  • thirty-six thousand cattle,
  • 30,500 donkeys
  • thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
  • and 16,000 people.
  • and sixteen thousand persons —
  • From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.
  • and from the children of Israel’s half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • Then the officers who were over the units of the army — the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds — went to Moses
  • Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses;
  • and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.
  • and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing.
  • So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired — armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces — to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
  • Therefore we have brought an offering for the Lord, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make [f]atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
  • Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold — all the crafted articles.
  • So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments.
  • All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.a
  • And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the Lord, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
  • Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.
  • (The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)
  • Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.
  • And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.
