The Parable of the Lost Sheep

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.

Підходили до Ісуса всі митники та грішники, щоби послухати Його.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

І нарікали фарисеї та книжники, говорячи, що Він грішників приймає і з ними їсть.

Then Jesus told them this parable:

А Він розповів їм ось таку притчу, кажучи:

4

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

4

Який чоловік із вас, маючи сто овець і загубивши одну з них, не лишає дев’яносто дев’ять у пустелі та не йде за тією, що загубилася, доки не знайде її?

5

And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders

5

І, знайшовши, бере на свої плечі, радіючи,

6

and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’

і, прийшовши до хати, він скликає друзів і сусідів, кажучи їм: Радійте зі мною, бо я знайшов мою вівцю, яка загубилася!

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Кажу вам, що за одного грішника, який кається, радість на небі буде більша, ніж за дев’яноста дев’ятьма праведниками, які не потребують покаяння.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coinsa and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

Або яка жінка, маючи десять драхм [1] , якщо загубила одну драхму, не запалює світильника і не замітає хати, шукаючи пильно, доки не знайде?

And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’

А знайшовши, скликає приятельок і сусідок, кажучи: Радійте зі мною, бо я знайшла драхму, що загубилася!

10

In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Такою, кажу вам, буває радість у Божих ангелів за одного грішника, який кається.

The Parable of the Lost Son

Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.

11

І Він розповів: Один чоловік мав двох синів.

12

The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

12

І молодший з них сказав батькові: Батьку, дай мені належну частину майна! І він поділив між ними майно.

13

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.

А через декілька днів, забравши все, молодший син подався до далекого краю і там розтратив своє майно, живучи розпусно.

14

After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.

Як витратив усе, настав великий голод у тому краї, і він став бідувати.

15

So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.

15

Пішов він, та й пристав до одного з громадян тієї землі, а той послав його на свої поля пасти свиней.

16

He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

16

І бажав він насититися стручками, які їли свині, але ніхто йому не давав.

17

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!

17

Опам’ятавшись, він сказав: Скільки наймитів мого батька мають у надлишку хліба, а я тут гину з голоду…

18

I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

18

Устану, піду до свого батька і скажу йому: Батьку, я згрішив перед небом і перед тобою

19

I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’

19

і вже не гідний зватися твоїм сином; прийми ж мене як одного з твоїх наймитів!

20

So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

20

Тож він, підійнявшись, пішов до свого батька. Коли він був ще далеко, батько побачив його й змилосердився; побігши, кинувся йому на шию і поцілував його.

21

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

21

А син сказав йому: Батьку, я згрішив перед небом і перед тобою; я вже не гідний зватися сином твоїм!

22

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

22

Та батько сказав своїм рабам: Негайно принесіть найкращий одяг і зодягніть його, дайте перстень йому на руку і взуття на ноги;

23

Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.

приведіть відгодоване теля та заколіть; будемо їсти й веселитися,

24

For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

24

бо цей син мій був мертвий — і ожив, пропав — і знайшовся! І почали веселитися.

25

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.

25

А його старший син був на полі. Коли, ідучи, наблизився до хати, почув співи й танці.

26

So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.

26

Закликавши одного зі слуг, він запитав: Що це таке?

27

‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

27

Той сказав йому: Твій брат повернувся, і твій батько заколов відгодоване теля, бо здоровим його прийняв.

28

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.

28

Тож він розгнівався і не хотів увійти. Його батько вийшов і вмовляв його.

29

But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

29

Та він у відповідь сказав своєму батькові: Ось, стільки років я тобі служу, ніколи не переступав твоєї заповіді, а ти мені не дав і козеняти, щоб я повеселився з моїми друзями.

30

But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

Коли ж цей син твій, який розтратив твоє майно з блудницями, повернувся, ти заколов йому відгодоване теля!

31

“ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.

31

А той відказав йому: Сину, ти завжди зі мною, і все моє — твоє.

32

But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”

32

Тут треба таки веселитися і радіти, бо цей брат твій був мертвий — і ожив, пропав — і знайшовся!
