Darby Bible Translation

  • Jesus Has Risen

    On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
  • The Resurrection

    But on the morrow of the sabbath, very early indeed in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the aromatic spices which they had prepared.
  • They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
  • And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
  • but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
  • And when they had entered they found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
  • While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
  • And it came to pass as they were in perplexity about it, that behold, two men suddenly stood by them in shining raiment.
  • In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
  • And as they were filled with fear and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, Why seek ye the living one among the dead?
  • He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
  • He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke to you, being yet in Galilee,
  • ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”
  • saying, The Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinners, and be crucified, and rise the third day.
  • Then they remembered his words.
  • And they remembered his words;
  • When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
  • and, returning from the sepulchre, related all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
  • It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
  • Now it was Mary of Magdala, and Johanna, and Mary the [mother] of James, and the others with them, who told these things to the apostles.
  • But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
  • And their words appeared in their eyes as an idle tale, and they disbelieved them.
  • Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
  • But Peter, rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down he sees the linen clothes lying there alone, and went away home, wondering at what had happened.
  • On the Road to Emmaus

    Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven milesa from Jerusalem.
  • The Road to Emmaus

    And behold, two of them were going on the same day to a village distant sixty stadia from Jerusalem, called Emmaus;
  • They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
  • and they conversed with one another about all these things which had taken place.
  • As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
  • And it came to pass as they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus himself drawing nigh, went with them;
  • but they were kept from recognizing him.
  • but their eyes were holden so as not to know him.
  • He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
    They stood still, their faces downcast.
  • And he said to them, What discourses are these which pass between you as ye walk, and are downcast?
  • One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
  • And one [of them], named Cleopas, answering said to him, Thou sojournest alone in Jerusalem, and dost not know what has taken place in it in these days?
  • “What things?” he asked.
    “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
  • And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazaraean, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;
  • The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
  • and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to [the] judgment of death and crucified him.
  • but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
  • But *we* had hoped that *he* was [the one] who is about to redeem Israel. But then, besides all these things, it is now, to-day, the third day since these things took place.
  • In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
  • And withal, certain women from amongst us astonished us, having been very early at the sepulchre,
  • but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
  • and, not having found his body, came, saying that they also had seen a vision of angels, who say that he is living.
  • Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
  • And some of those with us went to the sepulchre, and found it so, as the women also had said, but him they saw not.
  • He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
  • Jesus Explains the Prophecies

    And *he* said to them, O senseless and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
  • Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”
  • Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?
  • And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
  • And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
  • As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther.
  • And they drew near to the village where they were going, and *he* made as though he would go farther.
  • But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
  • And they constrained him, saying, Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is declining. And he entered in to stay with them.
  • When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.
  • And it came to pass as he was at table with them, having taken the bread, he blessed, and having broken it, gave it to them.
  • Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
  • And their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. And he disappeared from them.
  • They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
  • And they said to one another, Was not our heart burning in us as he spoke to us on the way, [and] as he opened the scriptures to us?
  • They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together
  • And rising up the same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven, and those with them, gathered together,
  • and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.”
  • saying, The Lord is indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.
  • Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
  • And they related what [had happened] on the way, and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.
  • Jesus Appears to the Disciples

    While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
  • Jesus Appears to the Disciples

    And as they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst, and says to them, Peace [be] unto you.
  • They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
  • But they, being confounded and being frightened, supposed they beheld a spirit.
  • He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
  • And he said to them, Why are ye troubled? and why are thoughts rising in your hearts?
  • Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
  • behold my hands and my feet, that it is *I* myself. Handle me and see, for a spirit has not flesh and bones as ye see me having.
  • When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
  • And having said this he shewed them his hands and his feet.
  • And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
  • But while they yet did not believe for joy, and were wondering, he said to them, Have ye anything here to eat?
  • They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
  • And they gave him part of a broiled fish and of a honeycomb;
  • and he took it and ate it in their presence.
  • and he took it and ate before them.
  • He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
  • Jesus Opens the Meaning of Scriptures

    And he said to them, These [are] the words which I spoke to you while I was yet with you, that all that is written concerning me in the law of Moses and prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.
  • Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
  • Then he opened their understanding to understand the scriptures,
  • He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
  • and said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved the Christ to suffer, and to rise from among the dead the third day;
  • and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations beginning at Jerusalem.
  • You are witnesses of these things.
  • And *ye* are witnesses of these things.
  • I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
  • And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but do ye remain in the city till ye be clothed with power from on high.
  • The Ascension of Jesus

    When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
  • The Ascension

    And he led them out as far as Bethany, and having lifted up his hands, he blessed them.
  • While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
  • And it came to pass as he was blessing them, he was separated from them and was carried up into heaven.
  • Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
  • And *they*, having done him homage, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
  • And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
  • and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God.
