Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

А Ісус, повний Духа Святого, вернувсь з-над Йорда́ну, і Дух на пустиню Його попрова́див.

2

where for forty days he was tempteda by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

Сорок день там диявол Його спокуша́в, і за тих днів Він нічого не їв, а коли закінчи́лись вони, то вкінці зголодні́в.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

3

І диявол до Нього сказав: „Якщо Ти Син Божий, — скажи цьому ка́меневі, щоб хлі́бом він став!“

4

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’b”

4

А Ісус відповів йому: „Написано: Не хлібом самим буде жити люди́на, але кожним Словом Божим!“

5

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.

5

І він вивів Його на го́ру високу, і за хвилину ча́су показав Йому всі царства на світі.

And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.

6

І диявол сказав Йому: „Я дам Тобі всю оцю вла́ду та їхню славу, бо мені це пере́дане, і я даю, кому хочу, її.

7

If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

7

Тож коли Ти покло́нишся передо мною, то все буде Твоє!“

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’c”

8

І промовив Ісус йому в відповідь: „Написано: Господеві Богові своєму вклоняйся, і служи Одно́му Йому!“

9

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.

9

І повів Його в Єрусалим, і на нарі́жнику храму поставив, та й каже Йому: „Як Ти Син Божий, — кинься звідси додолу!

10

For it is written:
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;

10

Бо написано: „Він накаже про Тебе Своїм Ангола́м, щоб Тебе берегли!“

11

they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’d”

і: „Вони на руках понесуть Тебе, щоб коли не спіткнув Ти об камінь Своєї ноги!“

12

Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’e”

А Ісус відказав йому в відповідь: „Сказано: Не спокуша́й Господа Бога свого́!“

13

When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

13

І диявол, скінчи́вши все цеє споку́шування, відійшов від Нього до ча́су.

14

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.

А Ісус у силі Духа вернувся до Галілеї, і чутка про Нього розне́слась по всій тій країні.

15

He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

15

І Він їх навчав по їхніх синагогах, і всі Його сла́вили.

16

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,

І прибув Він до Назаре́ту, де був ви́хований. І звича́єм Своїм Він прийшов дня суботнього до синаго́ги, і встав, щоб читати.

17

and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

І подали́ Йому книгу пророка Ісаї. Розгорнувши ж Він книгу, знайшов місце, де було так написано:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,

„На Мені Дух Господній, бо Мене Він пома́зав, щоб Добру Нови́ну звіщати вбогим. Послав Він Мене проповідувати полоне́ним визво́лення, а незрячим прозрі́ння, відпустити на волю пому́чених,

19

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”f

щоб проповідувати рік Господнього зми́лування“.

20

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.

І, книгу згорнувши, віддав службі й сів. А очі всіх у синагозі звернулись на Ньо́го.

21

He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

21

І почав Він до них говорити: „Сьогодні збуло́ся Писа́ння, яке ви почули!“

22

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

22

І всі Йому стверджували й дивувались словам благода́ті, що ли́нули з уст Його. І казали вони: „Чи ж то Він не син Йо́сипів?“

23

Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’ ”

Він же промовив до них: „Ви Мені конче скажете при́казку: „Лікарю, — уздоров самого себе! Учини те й тут, у вітчи́зні Своїй, що́ сталося — чули ми — у Капернау́мі“.

24

“Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

24

І сказав Він: „Поправді кажу вам: Жоден пророк не буває приємний у вітчи́зні своїй.

25

I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.

25

Та правдиво кажу́ вам: Багато вдовиць перебува́ло за днів Іллі серед Ізраїля, коли на три роки й шість місяців небо було́ зачинилося, так що голод великий настав був по всій тій землі,

26

Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

а Ілля́ не до жодної з них не був посланий, тільки в Саре́пту Сидо́нську до овдові́лої жінки.

27

And there were many in Israel with leprosyg in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed — only Naaman the Syrian.”

All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.

І всі в синагозі, почувши оце, перепо́внились гнівом.

They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

29

І, вставши, вони Його вигнали за місто, і повели́ аж до кра́ю гори, на якій їхнє місто було побудо́ване, щоб скинути додолу Його.

30

But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

30

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.

31

І прийшов Він у Капернау́м, галілейське місто, і там їх навчав по суботах.

32

They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.

32

І дивувались науці Його, бо слово Його було вла́дне.

33

In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,

І був чоловік у синагозі, що мав духа нечистого де́мона, і він закричав гучни́м голосом:

34

“Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”

34

„Ах, що нам до Тебе, Ісусе Назаряни́не? Ти прийшов погубити нас. Я знаю Тебе, хто Ти, — Божий Святий“.

35

“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

35

А Ісус заборони́в йому, кажучи: „Замовчи, і вийди з нього!“ І, кинувши де́мон того насере́дину, вийшов із нього, нічо́го йому не пошко́дивши.

36

All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”

36

І всіх жах обгорнув, і питали вони один о́дного, кажучи: „Що́ то за наука, що ду́хам нечистим наказує з вла́дою й силою, — і виходять вони?“

37

And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

37

І не́слася чутка про Нього по всіх місцях кра́ю.

38

Jesus Heals Many

Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.

38

А як вийшов Він із синагоги, увійшов у дім Си́мона. Теща ж Си́монова в великій гарячці лежала. І просили за неї Його.

39

So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

39

І, ставши над нею, Він заборони́в тій гарячці, — і вона полишила її. І, зараз уставши, теща їм прислуго́вувала.

40

At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.

40

Коли ж сонце захо́дило, то всі, хто мав яких хворих на різні неду́ги, до Нього приво́дили їх. Він же клав Свої руки на кожного з них, — та їх уздоровля́в.

41

Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.

Із багатьох же вихо́дили й де́мони, кричачи́ та гово́рячи: „Ти Син Божий!“ Та Він їм забороня́в, і не давав говорити, що знали вони, що Христос Він.

42

At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.

42

Коли ж настав день, Він вийшов, і подавсь до самотнього місця. А люди шукали Його. І прийшовши до Нього, Його затримували, щоб від них не відхо́див.

43

But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”

43

Він же промовив до них: „І іншим містам Я повинен звіщати Добру Нови́ну про Боже Царство, — бо на те Мене по́слано“.

44

And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

44

І Він проповідував по синагогах Галілеї.
