  • Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

    Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John —
  • Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

    When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than John
  • although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
  • (however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples),
  • So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
  • he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee.
  • Now he had to go through Samaria.
  • And he must needs pass through Samaria.
  • So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
  • He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
  • Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
  • Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
  • When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
  • A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drink
  • (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
  • (for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions).
  • The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.a)
  • The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans.
  • Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
  • Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
  • “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
  • The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water?
  • Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
  • Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
  • Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
  • Jesus answered and said to her, Every one who drinks of this water shall thirst again;
  • but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
  • but whosoever drinks of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst for ever, but the water which I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.
  • The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
  • The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst nor come here to draw.
  • He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
  • Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here.
  • “I have no husband,” she replied.
    Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.
  • The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus says to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband;
  • The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
  • for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom now thou hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly.
  • “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
  • The woman says to him, Sir, I see that thou art a prophet.
  • Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
  • Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.
  • “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
  • Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, [the] hour is coming when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father.
  • You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
  • Ye worship ye know not what; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.
  • Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
  • But [the] hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for also the Father seeks such as his worshippers.
  • God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
  • God [is] a spirit; and they who worship him must worship [him] in spirit and truth.
  • The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
  • The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when *he* comes he will tell us all things.
  • Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you — I am he.”
  • Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am [he].
  • The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

    Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
  • The Disciples Return and Marvel

    And upon this came his disciples, and wondered that he spoke with a woman; yet no one said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?
  • Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
  • The woman then left her waterpot and went away into the city, and says to the men,
  • “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
  • Come, see a man who told me all things I had ever done: is not he the Christ?
  • They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
  • They went out of the city and came to him.
  • Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
  • But meanwhile the disciples asked him saying, Rabbi, eat.
  • But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
  • But he said to them, I have food to eat which ye do not know.
  • Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
  • The disciples therefore said to one another, Has any one brought him [anything] to eat?
  • “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
  • Jesus says to them, My food is that I should do the will of him that has sent me, and that I should finish his work.
  • Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
  • Do not ye say, that there are yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and behold the fields, for they are already white to harvest.
  • Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
  • He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal, that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together.
  • Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
  • For in this is [verified] the true saying, It is one who sows and another who reaps.
  • I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
  • I have sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours.
  • Many Samaritans Believe

    Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”

    But many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him because of the word of the woman who bore witness, He told me all things that I had ever done.
  • So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.
  • When therefore the Samaritans came to him they asked him to abide with them, and he abode there two days.
  • And because of his words many more became believers.
  • And more a great deal believed on account of his word;
  • They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
  • and they said to the woman, [It is] no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

    After the two days he left for Galilee.

    But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee,
  • (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
  • for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country.
  • When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.
  • When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast.
  • Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
  • He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick.
  • When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
  • He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked [him] that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
  • “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
  • Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe.
  • The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
  • The courtier says to him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
  • “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
    The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
  • Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.
  • While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
  • But already, as he was going down, his servants met him and brought [him] word saying, Thy child lives.
  • When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
  • He inquired therefore from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
  • Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.
  • The father therefore knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives; and he believed, himself and his whole house.
  • This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
  • This second sign again did Jesus, being come out of Judaea into Galilee.
