  • Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.
  • The Lord is Good

    Laying aside therefore all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envyings and all evil speakings,
  • Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
  • as newborn babes desire earnestly the pure mental milk of the word, that by it ye may grow up to salvation,
  • now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
  • if indeed ye have tasted that the Lord [is] good.
  • The Living Stone and a Chosen People

    As you come to him, the living Stone — rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him —
  • The Living Stone

    To whom coming, a living stone, cast away indeed as worthless by men, but with God chosen, precious,
  • you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual housea to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
  • yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
  • For in Scripture it says:
    “See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,
    and the one who trusts in him
    will never be put to shame.”b
  • Because it is contained in the scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believes on him shall not be put to shame.
  • Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
    “The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”c
  • To you therefore who believe [is] the preciousness; but to the disobedient, the stone which the builders cast away as worthless, this is become head of [the] corner,
  • and,
    “A stone that causes people to stumble
    and a rock that makes them fall.”d
    They stumble because they disobey the message — which is also what they were destined for.
  • and a stone of stumbling and rock of offence; [who] stumble at the word, being disobedient to which also they have been appointed.
  • But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
  • But *ye* [are] a chosen race, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a people for a possession, that ye might set forth the excellencies of him who has called you out of darkness to his wonderful light;
  • Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
  • who once [were] not a people, but now God's people; who were not enjoying mercy, but now have found mercy.
  • Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

    Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.
  • Beloved, I exhort [you], as strangers and sojourners, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
  • Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
  • having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that [as to that] in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may through [your] good works, [themselves] witnessing [them], glorify God in [the] day of visitation.
  • Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,
  • Submission to Authorities

    Be in subjection [therefore] to every human institution for the Lord's sake; whether to [the] king as supreme,
  • or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.
  • or to rulers as sent by him, for vengeance on evildoers, and praise to them that do well.
  • For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
  • Because so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye put to silence the ignorance of senseless men;
  • Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.
  • as free, and not as having liberty as a cloak of malice, but as God's bondmen.
  • Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
  • Shew honour to all, love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the king.
  • Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.
  • Servants, [be] subject with all fear to your masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the ill-tempered.
  • For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.
  • For this [is] acceptable, if one, for conscience sake towards God, endure griefs, suffering unjustly.
  • But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.
  • For what glory [is it], if sinning and being buffeted ye shall bear [it]? but if, doing good and suffering, ye shall bear [it], this is acceptable with God.
  • To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
  • Christ's Example of Suffering

    For to this have ye been called; for Christ also has suffered for you, leaving you a model that ye should follow in his steps:
  • “He committed no sin,
    and no deceit was found in his mouth.”e
  • who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth;
  • When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.
  • who, [when] reviled, reviled not again; [when] suffering, threatened not; but gave [himself] over into the hands of him who judges righteously;
  • “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
  • who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, in order that, being dead to sins, we may live to righteousness: by whose stripes ye have been healed.
  • For “you were like sheep going astray,”f but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
  • For ye were going astray as sheep, but have now returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.
