Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

яко ж новорожденні дїти будьте жадні словесного чистого молока, щоб у ньому виросли на спасеннє;

now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone — rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him —

Приступаючи до Него, до каменя живого, від людей відкинутого, від Бога ж вибраного, дорогого,

you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual housea to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

і самі, яко живе каміннє, будуйте дім духовний, сьвященство сьвяте, щоб приношено духовні жертви любоприємні Богу через Ісуса Христа.

For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”b

Тим то й стоїть в писанню: "Ось, кладу в Сионї угольний, камінь, вибраний, дорогий; і віруючий в Него не осоромить ся."

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”c

Оце ж вам віруючим, — дорогий, неслухняним же "камінь, що відкинули будівничі, та став ся у голову угла, — камінь спотикання і скеля поблазнї";

and,
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”d
They stumble because they disobey the message — which is also what they were destined for.

і спотикають ся, не слухаючи слова, на що вони й полишені.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Ви ж — рід вибраний, царське сьвященство, нарід сьвятий, люде прибрані, щоб звіщали чесноти Покликавшого вас із темряви у дивне своє сьвітло;

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

ви, колись і не народ, а тепер народ Божий; непомилувані, а тепер помилувані.

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Любі, молю, як чужосторонцїв і прохожих, ухилятись від тїлесного хотїння, котре воює проти душі,

12

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

і вести добре життє своє між поганами, щоб, у чому судять вас яко лиходїїв, наглядаючи добрі дїла (ваші), славили Бога в день одвідання.

13

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,

Тим то коріть ся всякому чоловічому начальству ради Господа: чи то цареві, яко значному,

14

or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.

чи то начальникам, яко від него посланим на одмщеннє лиходїям, а на хвалу добротворцям.

15

For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

Така бо воля Божа, щоб ви, роблячи добро, затикали уста невіжи безрозумних людей,

16

Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.

яко свобідні, а не яко ті, що мають свободу за покриттє злоби, а яко слуги Божі.

17

Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

Усїх шануйте; браттівство любіте; Бога лякайтесь; царя честїть.

18

Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

Слуги, з усяким страхом корітесь панам, не тільки добрим і лагідним, а також лукавим.

19

For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.

19

Се бо угодно перед Богом, коли хто ради совісти Божої переносить смуток, страждаючи не по правдї.

20

But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

20

Яка бо похвала, коли, согрішаючи й биті в лице, терпите? Тільки коли добре робите, і, страждаючи терпите, то се угодно перед Богом.

21

To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

На се бо ви покликані, бо і Христос страждав за вас, оставляючи вам приклад, щоб ви йшли слїдом за Його стопами;

22

“He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.”e

котрий не зробив гріха, анї не знайдено підступу в устах Його;

23

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

23

котрий, злословлений, не злословив, і страждаючи, не грозив, а передав Судячому праведно;

24

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

24

котрий гріхи наші сам піднїс на тїлї своїм на дереві, щоб ми, для гріхів умерши, правдою жили; котрого "ранами сцїлились".

25

For “you were like sheep going astray,”f but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

25

Були бо ви, як вівцї блукаючі; тільки ж вернулись нинї до Пастиря і Владики душ ваших.
