The Man of Lawlessness

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,

The Great Apostasy

Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you,

not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us — whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter — asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.

not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of [a]Christ had come.

Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessnessa is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of [b]sin is revealed, the son of perdition,

He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits [c]as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?

Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?

And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.

And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time.

For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.

For the [d]mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [e]He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,

and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie

And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,

and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Firm

But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruitsb to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

Stand Fast

But we are [f]bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through [g]sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,

He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachingsc we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our [h]epistle.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace,

encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

comfort your hearts and [i]establish you in every good word and work.
