This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,
Адже цей Мелхиседек, цар Салимський, священик Бога Всевишнього, зустрів Авраама, коли той повертався з бою із царями, і благословив його.
and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.”
Авраам же виділив йому десятину з усього; він, ім’я якого насамперед означає «цар праведності», потім вже «цар Салимський», тобто «цар миру», —
Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
без батька, без матері, без родоводу, не має ані початку днів, ані кінця життя; він — подібний до Божого Сина — назавжди залишається священиком.
Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!
Бачите, який великий той, кому патріарх Авраам дав десятину з найкращої здобичі!
Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people — that is, from their fellow Israelites — even though they also are descended from Abraham.
Ті з синів Левія, які одержують священство, мають заповідь за Законом: брати десятину від людей, тобто від своїх братів, хоч і вони з роду Авраама.
This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
А той, хто не був з їхнього роду, взяв десятину від Авраама і поблагословив того, котрий мав обітниці.
And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater.
Без жодного заперечення: менше благословляється більшим.
In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.
Отже, тут десятини одержують смертні люди, а там — Той, про кого засвідчено, що Він живий.
One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham,
Тож, так би мовити, і Левій, який бере десятини, дав через Авраама десятину,
because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

Jesus Like Melchizedek
If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood — and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood — why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?

For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also.
Це тому, що зі зміною священства потрібно, щоби змінився і Закон.
He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.
Адже Той, про Кого йде мова, належав до іншого племені, з якого ніхто не мав участі в жертовнику.
For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
Бо ж відомо, що наш Господь походив від Юди, а про це плем’я Мойсей нічого не говорив щодо священства.
And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears,
Це стає ще яснішим, коли за подобою Мелхиседека з’являється інший Священик,
one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life.
Який став таким не за Законом тілесної заповіді, а за силою незнищенного життя.
Тому що є свідчення: Ти — Священик навіки за чином Мелхиседека.
The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless
Отже, попередня заповідь скасовується через її немічність і некорисність,
(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
бо Закон нічого не вдосконалив, тож нововведене — краща надія, якою ми наближаємося до Бога.
And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath,
І оскільки це не без клятви, бо ті стали священиками без клятви, —
Цей же — з клятвою Того, Хто до Нього каже: Поклявся Господь і не розкається, що Ти — Священик навіки [за чином Мелхиседека], —
Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.
то настільки й Ісус став запорукою кращого Завіту.
Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;
Крім того, тих священиків було багато, оскільки смерть не давала залишатися їм,
but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.
а Цей, перебуваючи вічно, має священство нескінченне.
Тому, будучи завжди живим, Він може завжди спасати тих, хто приходить до Бога через Нього, аби заступатися за них.
Such a high priest truly meets our need — one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
Такого потрібно було нам Первосвященика: святого, невинного, непричетного до зла, відділеного від грішників, вищого за небо.
Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
Він не має потреби щодня, як первосвященики, приносити жертви, — спочатку за Свої гріхи, а потім за гріхи народу, бо Він це зробив один раз, принісши Самого Себе.
For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
Адже Закон велів наставляти первосвящениками людей, які мають немочі, а слово клятви, що після Закону, настановило навіки досконалого Сина.
